Word is he has an extension on the table. Top 10 salary plus over 1 million in raises for his assistants. Sumlin is 10th highest at 5 mil plus 1 mil bonus so I'm assuming the extension is for 6+.

From an xs and os player dev perspective you cant find a better "sure thing". Everything else that goes along with it off the field he will have a culture shock that makes him not worth it. Huge gamble.

Tennessee isn't the Deep South and Knoxville is even further from being the Deep South. I don't think the culture shock would be that great. How seriously fans take things probably would be a shock but he's in his 50s and been at this game a long time. I doubt it would phase him.

As to UW... they were a power once and have always held onto that. Their expectations are bigger than you think.

Yeah Marrone wants the job. The problem has been the NFL schedule vs NCAA recruiting schedules.

Yeah you told me nothing I didnt already know, and my opinion is the same. Still be a huge difference for a guy that spent his life west of the rockies. Especially his family.

And Knoxville not being in the deep south doesnt make a difference to me as his recruiting territory is. No matter how much middle tn has progressed.

no one is paying a coach who has not won anything that kind of money. I mean no one. And if UT does many SEC fans will be laughing at UT

Tennessee recruits nationally and always has. That includes the Deep South but also includes the Upper South, Midwest and West Coast. Honestly, I doubt recruiting N. Georgia would phase him one bit. And I don't think recruiting South Florida is all that different from recruiting a lot of places out West. Recruiting is recruiting no matter where your target is.

Recruiting the Deep South didn't phase Jones at all and he was from so far up in MI that he might as well been from Canada.

From a mod on Mississippi State's Rivals board when asked about Mullen by a Tennessee poster

quote:

I've been in the business almost 30 years and have to admit your school is a tough one to read and it's one of the few schools that I don't have any good contacts at so I can't help a lot. I know Butch personally from his time at West Virginia (I own the WVU site and have for 25+ years). As of last week he thought Gruden was your guy. As for Mullen it's hard to say what will happen with him. I think he knows it will be difficult to get MSU a lot better than the program is now and unfortunately fans and admins start to turn on you at some point.

I just want to point out that Dan Mullen has lost 4 or more games in 8 of his 9 seasons at State.

In the long run-it could be bad for him as for job security. 8 and 9 win seasons at Tenn will not cut it and he would be out in 3 or 4 years.....at State, he would have a statue put outside the stadium and at almost 5 mil a year. That's BS about him hitting the ceiling at State because success breeds better recruits. He made a run a couple years ago with a number 1 team-next year's team will be loaded and the recruiting classes have steadily improved. So yes, the lure of bigger bucks at a bigger program could have the goose with the golden eggs effect for him in the long run!!!

Nice. Hope that guy really does know Jones because Gruden was always on friendly terms with Butch.

What happens if he does a better job than the last three coaches Tennessee had done over the years?

He has to get past being an 8-9 win coach. If we wanted that we could've just kept Butch because this season aside that's the kinda coach Jones was.

Mullen's record at State is comparable to Jones' record at UT. And IIRC, Jones has more wins against ranked teams. That's not acceptable.

I've asked the question over and over but it comes down to this: Is Mullen at State like James Franklin at Vandy and ready to take a jump with more resources OR is he simply what his record says he is?

FWIW, Hubbs is making it sound like there won't be a meeting today with Mullen. If anything today will be a phone call.

Oh, I saw that already. Post game press conference, I thought Dallastiger was talking about an official statement this morning.

Yeah, that's not an official statement. He said he plans on staying. Lots of people plan things. Plans change.

There was a West Virginia website in 1992 or sooner? Sounds like bullshite.

Congrats on spelling this correctly. Especially since the first reply to your post, from a Bama fan, inevitably got it wrong.

To pull a sitting and successful p5 coach you're more than likely going to have to overpay.

this is the reality. esp when you consider that a guy already making right at 5 million a year is probably not going to move for a "mere" half to one million more a year (if he's happy where he's at).

there is most definitely a point where "happiness" and other considerations trump money as the motivating factor. Dan Mullen makes about 4 and a half mil right now and I bet MSU would poney up a little more or at least extend his deal out a year or two.
