Lots of talk about Freeman(hopefully the hire) and his base 4-3/3-3-5 offense.

I live in Iowa and watch a lot of Iowa State who runs the same defense.(Multiple sets) I’m not a defensive expert, but here is something I’ve noticed.

ISU still usually rushes four. The 4th rusher is delayed. He is kind of spy/delayed blitzer. The linebacker waits to see how the lineman are blocking and then either eyes the mobile QB or runs downhill after them in the natural hole that has been created.

The 3 rushing linemen can’t be double teamed because they still have to account for the linebacker.

In my humble opinion, Philip Webb and Zavier Carter could do very well in this position... Assuming BJO is on the line.

EDIT: Zach Arnett is interviewing evidently. Runs the same system.

I hope he can find a way to get Webb involved. Run a lot of 4-2-5 as well like the saints

Thanks for the information.

I guess the question I would have, is what body types are you looking for in the front 3 vs. middle 3?

Would someone like Maason Smith line up over the nose like Shelvin did in our base 3-4?

Is there a Mike, Will and Sam with the middle 3?

We did this in the 2nd half vs Ole Miss with Andre Anthony standing up. Seemed to work really well the 2 times we ran it. I don't remember seeing it any other time in the year.

That’s a great question. There is no true nose tackle from what I’ve seen.

The delayed blitzer/spy at ISU is built like a middle linebacker. What you call in an Iowa a “corn-fed white boy.”

I would classify it as an ‘Edge’ position that doesn’t play on the edge. Speed, strength and quickness to play in space, stop the run with rush the passer moves.

Very versatile.

For the record: Marcel Brooks would have thrived.

I think the bottom line is that any DC that wants to remain employed has to be knowledgeable and willing to run multiple sets. The evolution of offenses demands it.

Freeman seems to change his defense to fit his players. Which is awesome.

Totally agree.

With Roy and Smith.. I still believe you’ll see a good bit of 4-2-5.

His corners are on islands. Mano y Mano. Love it!

freeman will adjust to available personnel and schemes. 3-3-5 may have to do more with cincy's jimmys/joes, rather than a set in stone schematic. i think hes probably wise enough to change as needed.

Good call. The strength of our personnel currently is the front 4, and the last recruiting class added to that depth.

We have some versatile players there like Anthony and Ojulari who can stand up and cover the flat.

I would think we'll see more 4-2-5 looks for the foreseeable future.

Ages ago when I was in the business We based out of the 4-3. I was dabbling with the 3-3-5. It had the potential to be more versatile than the 4-3. The odd stack defense can be a 3-3-5, 3-5-3, 5-3-3.

It was relatively new to us and the Internet was not what it is today. So we were building it in house. The run fits can be tricky but once you get them down it’s pretty dang good.

We worked with it because 12 personnel groupings creat issues for a typical 4-3.

Guillory might be better for that role than Smith

What do the DL look like in the 3-3-5?

We ran a little bit of it against Ole Miss with BJ standing up and Roy playing opposite him.

The thing about young coaches like Freeman and defenses like the 335 is that they can be very multiple. They are going to adapt to the personell and offense.

You will see a lot of multiple looks. It is perfect for playing spreads and air raids, but maybe not as much for power spreads.

Smith and Roy are versatile.. I could see Freeman lining them up all over the line just like they do with Donald, Cox, Atkins and Jarrett in the pros.

All it does it make someone like Gaye stand up and play that position unless they want to mix in a real LB. Maybe someone like Webb who would've been in that 3-4 role as the 4th LB pass rusher. I could see that working about there as he was more recruited for 3-4 and this prevents guys like that from transferring. Not sure what happened to him as O praised him then he never really got PT.

I think his scheme is good for LSU and it's especially good against more wide open spread teams which is what you want in modern NCAA.
