Fiction and non-fiction

For the fiction recommendations, I prefer something realistic and not the Jack Reacher type of novels.

John le Carre: Smiley trilogy (The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Smiley's People). This is the best.
Len Deighton: (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match). If you like le Carre, you will like this trilogy too.
Tom Clancy: The Hunt for Red October.
Frederick Forsyth: The Day of the Jackal. Does this one count? Not quite a spy novel.
Ken Follet: Eye of the Needle.
Demille Nelson: The Charm School. Very underrated.

I was a huge fan of Robert Ludlum back in the day. He wrote Cold War espionage thrillers. I haven't read his books in years so I don't know if they may seem dated. It may be time for a reread.

At a minimum his Bourne Trilogy is always a must-read.

The Grey Man series by Mark Greaney was fun and there are around 15 of them. I thought they were more realistic and grittier than the Reacher books.

Also they Sigma Force series by James Rollins were entertaining as well.

The Parsifal Mosaic is my favorite must read Ludlum novel. It pretty much blew my mind back in the 80s.

"Michael Havelock’s world died on a moonlit beach on the Costa Brava as he watched his partner and lover, double agent Jenna Karas, efficiently gunned down by his own agency. There’s nothing left for him but to quit the game, get out. Then, in one frantic moment on a crowded railroad platform in Rome, Havelock sees Jenna. Racing around the globe in search of his beautiful betrayer, Havelock is now marked for death by both U.S. and Russian assassins, trapped in a massive mosaic of treachery created by a top-level mole with the world in his fist: Parsifal."
