Is Audible worth it?

I like audiobooks, but I usually just buy them when I’m interested. Audible is subscription only and can download 1 a month. Not bad, but can you still listen to others?

Would recommend checking your local libraries to see how good their audiobook catalog is before signing up with Audible. Most libraries have free audiobook subscriptions or maybe a small fee depending on where you live. For instance, I'm considered to live just outside the city limits of Austin, so it costs me $20 per year for the Austin Public Library audiobook subscription. Would be free if I lived inside city limits.
In 4 years since I've had their subscription, I've listened to 50+ books and maybe 4 times I searched for an audiobook that the Austin library didn't have in its selection.
Still way more than worth it for me for the $ saved. If I loved a book enough after listening to it that I'd want to own it, I'll purchase the hardcover of it afterwards.
Edit: never had a Audible subscription, but I thought the one book credit per month was to purchase a book outright. Basically you can still listen to anything that you want with Audible on top of that one free book credit that lets you purchase something. I may be wrong though.

You'll get unlimited access to their Audible Plus library, which is mostly trash. Anything worth reading, you'll have to spend your credit on.
I use the Libby app. It gives me free access to audiobooks at my local libraries.

Hell no. Just get a library card and a app on your phone and check out audible books that way. You already pay for it.

I mostly agree with this. There are a few free gems available but the good stuff you’ll have to burn a credit for
They do have most of the great courses for free. Those are great and you can find whatever interests you as well.

Check out Scribd as an alternative. 13 bucks a month and no credits or whatever. Just find what you want and stream. The library isn’t as big as audible but I’ve had no problem finding things to listen to.

Got my card and the Libby app. Already checked out a book.

Some libraries have multiple programs you can use with your library card. Libby, Cloud Library, and hoopla come to mind. Audible does have exclusive productions. I use both Audible for the 1 a month, but the library for others throughout the month

I enjoy having it. I usually have extra credits waiting to be used.
If I go on a bender and use up all my credits, it’s pretty easy to return an old title and get your credit back.

I love my hoopla app. I also use Audible bc hoopla doesn’t have some books I want.

Ive been using audible a lot more now but i just signed up with the local library after seeing this. Im spending too much money, haha.
Actually, do you have to wait until the book is returned to listen to it? I was trying to add a book to listen to and it says a 20 week wait, like wtf? Id rather pay then wait 20 weeks,

Yes that’s the big issue with the library.
I’ve been with Audible since 2014. I’m in the car a bunch so it’s worth to me. I’ve listened to 114 books.
I check the library first often for shorter books.
For long ones like Lonesome Dove etc the library is a risk. If someone gets on the waitlist and you aren’t finished in the allotted time it disappears and you have to get back in line.

Download Hoopla also.
It has a larger selection of audiobooks.

Tell me more. I didn’t know this was a thing.
