1) It seems it should be very significant that Winterfell rests on hot springs, no?

100% yes, I think that it's definitely important. Some crackpot theorists think that there may be a dragon down there causing the hot springs to be hot. I think that it may also help against defeating the Others.

2)If Cersei's life is in the balance with her Trial by champion, then it would be The Hound who becomes the valaquar, correct?

We've thrown a lot a lotttt of different characters to be Cersei's valonqar. Some say the Hound, some say Tommen, some say Jaime, some say Tyrion, some say Rickon, some say Jon Snow....the list is endless and it depends on whether Maggie the Frog meant for Valonqar to literally be Cersei's little brother(s) (Jaime or Tyrion) or anyone's little brother (Sandor, Rickon, Tommen, Jon Snow assuming he's younger than Robb and even taking R+L=J into account, he'd technically be younger than Aegon & Rhaenys).

I've been rereading different chapters here and there, and I find the Hound to be very fascinating. He's really messed up from his childhood traumas and from the Mountain (I think anyone would be screwed up with him as a brother). I may be in the minority, but I 100% think that his story isn't finished; what we can gain from what Elder Brother told Brienne, it's that the Hound persona is dead, but not Sandor himself. And maybe this is being too optimistic but I think he's going to meet Sansa again. I'd love for him to be the Faith's champion and to kill his undead brother once and for all; but I also think that killing is going against his redemption arc. There's a really good thread on the ASOIAF forum that talks about Sansa at length, and parts of it are about Sandor and his Quiet Isle redemption arc, and how him and Sansa are inverting the Beauty and the Beast story by him finding
'beauty'/peace within himself/healing and Sansa finding the 'beast' within herself and not using courtesy as her armor and being more bold.

3) Is is significant that Sam Tarly's house sigil is a single striding huntsman, and thus he may end up the "lone hunter" with the sword Heartsbane to destroy the heart of winter?

I'm really liking where Sam's story is going in the Citadel. I definitely think he's going to be a TWoW POV character and I wonder if we're going to see Oldtown get screwed by Euron through his POV. I also think that Sam's main purpose in the Citadel is going to be finding out information about the Others, Azor Ahai, PtwP, Targ stuff, etc. and then leaving once he finds what he's looking for. I don't think he's going to hang out at the Citadel for the next 2 books, and I definitely think that his knowledge is going to help Westeros beat the Others.

Nice synopsis.

Samwell has been through so much. He isn't finished in how his character is going to be important to the end result. A confrontation between him and his father is inevitable.

From Pawn to Player: Rethinking Sansa, thread XXI
Excellent thread that is great for reading up about Sansa and a lotttt of symbolism that I never picked up on my first reread. My mind was blown.
Sansa & the Hound 1
Sansa & the Hound 2
Sansa & the Hound 3

There's also another essay on there about sweetness/sweet breath/mint breath (i.e. how Littlefinger chews mint all the time) being negative/evil/death in ASOIAF and having sour breath/wine breath as being good.

For anyone else who needs it, I have a 4 year old and a 5 month old so I hit the sack pretty early. If it's after 11, I'll send it in the morning.

I think it will have something to do with Jaqen/Alchemist storyline. I also find it interesting that he has come across all of the living Stark children, minus Sansa.

Since most of y'all are reading Greens vs. Blacks right now...

Are any of y'all also confused about all these different Targs and all their relations? Husband and Uncle, Sister and Wife... Man screw this inbred shite, I can't keep them all straight, they also all have the same names are many before and after them, with similar spellings amongst the whole lot. It's a very good story so far but dang it's hard to keep them all straight.

Just so I can get this straight, this is the Dance of Dragons talked about in the The Hedge Knight, etc. that basically sets up that whole storyline? And when does Bryden Rivers come into the tale?

Eta: Nevermind, , I've figured it out...no we're much further back in this story. It was the Blackfyre Rebellion I was confused about.

I agree. It's pretty amazing that he crosses paths with Bran, Rickon, and Arya in FM form. He may end up meeting Sansa; anything is possible and it seems like a decent amount of people are about to cross paths soon. Sandor in the QI, Sansa/Alayne at the Gates of the Moon now (or is it the Bloody Gate? Can't remember), Jaime and Brienne in Riverlands. Not too far from each other; I think it's likely that Sansa is going to leave the Vale in TWoW.

What I'd pay money to see is Littlefinger meet Lady Stoneheart.

I think Arya was in her normal form when running into Sam.

Edit: it drove me nuts because I was hoping she'd just be like "hey tubs you know jon snow? That's my half brother. Tell him what's up"

I think the Cat just took a different name, not face.

Sandor defeating his undead brother wouldn't violate his vows against killing though, just vanquishing the undead.
