PAC 12 & FOX Having Discussions About Moving Kickoffs To 9 A.M.
© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
The PAC 12 is continuing to look at new ways to be in the mix with the other big conferences. They're now looking at moving kickoffs to an earlier time on Saturdays instead of having their games going late into the night for the everyone not on the west coast. Per NBC Sports...
quote:

The conference confirmed they have had preliminary discussions with Fox about having a Pac-12 game kickoff at 9 a.m. PT/noon ET as soon as this season in order to help alleviate night kickoffs and explore a new TV window to maximize exposure on the East Coast. While there would be at most one or two games after Week 3 that would even be eligible (and Mountain Time Zone schools like Utah and Colorado would be chief candidates), it certainly sounds like there’s a real possibility of it happening.

“We’ve discussed it recently. That would be new and out of the box for our conference but I’ve tried to put everything on the table. There’s a lot of frustration from fans in certain markets to the late night kicks,” commissioner Larry Scott told NBC Sports. “I’d like to see one or two games this season that are 12 noon (ET) kicks be Pac-12 games and see what markets might respond positively to that.”
People in California will hate this and they already don't care about sports. You dig this idea? Would it help the PAC 12?

I live 30 minutes from the Rose bowl and that is pretty close compared to a lot of people. They are asking me to get up and drive from my house to see UCLA at like 7am on a saturday morning? That is insane.....

ESPN won't be satisfied until they destroy college football.

Oh, god. Remember how much those dreaded Jefferson Pilot 11am kickoffs sucked?

I get the concept, but why not kickoff mid-morning, maybe 10:30 Pacific time. That's 1:30 Eastern. And how about more Thursday and Friday games, which have sucked in recent years. They could own TH and Friday nights.

Because it doesn't follow the TV schedules. With the current format, ESPN can show up to 4 games per day. If they were to kick off at 12:30 CST, then they could only show 3 games per day.

So their already shitty attendance will be that of a middle school team

That sounds terrible for the players. Can you imagine having to wake up at 4-5am to start your day to play a hard hitting game of football a mere 4 hours later? Hard pass.

"People in California will hate this and they already don't care about sports." All the more reason to put the games on when other people might watch.

“The PAC 12 is continuing to look at new ways to be in the mix with the other big conferences.” - they can start by not sucking balls at football

The late night games is what makes the conference fun imo. Nothing like falling asleep at 1am with a game on. But I suppose they gotta make sure the pollsters and pundits can see the product, even though its 2019 and they can watch highlights on the toilet now.

Better for those who want to see them everywhere else. Sucks for PAC-12 fans.

So 11 a.m. kickoffs aren’t bad enough?

I think it is pretty funny that they want to "explore" new Western time slots to better serve the East Coast. Hahaha

I guess they would have to arrive around midnight to start tailgating!

That ought to really boost attendance.
