During an interview with USA Today, LSU Athletic Director Verge Ausberry had some very straightforward words about former coach Brian Kelly and his lack of connection within the football program.

Ausberry suggested that Kelly wasn't putting in the extra off-the-field work with boosters and alumni, whereas Kiffin is the opposite so far.
quote:

“It’s going back to the Saban model,” Ausberry told USA TODAY Sports of the program’s redirect. “(That means) running the whole program. Then, you have to go do some things with alumni and do things with boosters and do things with fundraising, with NIL. You have to be a part of that.”

“That’s what Lane will do,” Ausberry continued. “He’ll go out there and have that conversation with the donors and the people who support the program and (say), ‘We need your help,’ and give them his cell number.

“He’s not one who’ll say, ‘OK, I don’t want people to contact me. I don’t want people to touch me. I don’t want people to be around me.’ That’s who we had. That’s why we got what we got. There was no feel, there was no connection between the LSU football program, the coach, and the fans.”
Ausberry added that Kelly's closed-door approach for former players around the football facility was also a problem:
quote:

“There was no connection and no building” when Kelly was coach, Ausberry said. “Not many employees connected. The former players didn’t connect. Yeah, I’m saying it.

“Now, former players live over there (at the facility), go over there, we welcome them over there, (they) work out over there. That’s what we want. That’s who LSU used to be. Former players came in the weight room, and they worked out. There wasn’t signing no form to be able to work out, or, ‘Who are you? You can’t work out at this time.’”

Imagine how bad it must have been for Verge to be speaking out like this. I don’t blame Brian Kelly. He is who he is. I blame Woodward.

Woodward loved to waste other people’s money. Silo glad he’s gone

"I don’t blame Brian Kelly."

Brian Kelly holds ALL the blame. He's a fraud. A lazy fraud.

Kelly came here thinking it was going to be easy to win a national championship.
When he quickly found out it was going to be hard after year 2, he just shut it down and collected a paycheck till he got fired.

Unfortunately for Kelly the game was evolving so rapidly and he is not the kind of coach who can sell a program. That’s part of it now. Kelly just has an awkward pompous personality. I think he is completely done at this point, to many variables in the College game now and he is bad at half of them.

People forget, Kelly was brought in to stabilize a program that was spiraling downward in a tailspin. He actually did that his first year, stabilizing the program and even getting to the SEC championship game. But then after that, he didn’t do much of anything, and it was very obvious that he wasn’t a long-term option for us. LSU big screwup was signing Kelly to a 10 year deal. That was way too long for a man his age.

Eh, you need to keep a good relationship with former players and have them visit, speak to the team but you can’t just have them coming and going in the facility as they please either.

You keep players in Louisiana by treating the past, present and future LSU athletes like they mean something. Those relationships matter. Verge knows the heart of former LSU football players and how coaches value them. He is one.

I don’t think Lane is that comfortable in press conference settings but I have been told he is very personable in one on one situations

Verge has a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1990, a Master of Education in 1992, and a Specialist in Higher Education Administration in 2004 — all from LSU. He can express himself any way he wishes

Where was the bad grammar?

He wasn't hired for his grammar. His job is to see LSU's athletic program succeed.

Kelly was an awful hire and it was obvious his first day that he was a fraud when he tried to talk with a southern accent. Screw him. All he wanted to do was play golf and enjoy his large wine collection. Good riddance.
