SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has some concerns about the possibility of expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams.

While discussing the idea, Sankey pointed to several issues that would need to be worked through, including the financial side of expansion, the strain of playing additional games in December, and what it could mean for conference championship games.

Sankey also believes the current playoff selection process is already affecting how teams approach their non-conference scheduling Per Brett McMurphy:
quote:

"Our concerns relate to how you manage the economics. Is there value? I don’t think people understand the difficulty of going week to week to week to week in December. … We’ve looked at it & said CFP selection decisions are negatively impacting regular-season scheduling, particularly big non-conference games. That needs to be addressed first & also the economics, what we do with conference championship games, where the games fit & understanding the impact"
The comments come as discussions continue about potentially expanding the College Football Playoff beyond its current format.

More worried about money than player safety or the lack of competitiveness between #1 and #24. This isn’t basketball.

If Sankey is against it I suppose that makes me for it.

Sankey is a moron but he’s right about this. A 16 team format is more feasible, better for the players and will generate less non-competitive games.

I’ve heard suggestions that conference championship game could be repurposed as a play-in game for the playoffs. Which seems like a possibility, but I wonder what hidden flaws are lurking in the idea.

SEC makes the most off of conf champ game. SEC should get more for giving it up.

If 24 teams are making the playoffs then the CCG loser is still gonna get in

Yeah no shite. Never worried about preserving the spirit of the game. Just milk the cow until its dead

I'm glad he is raising concerns. It's a stupid idea and I don't like Sankey but he is making points. But he should add player safety to it as well. This will really put a stake in the other bowl games, which are meaningless now.

If it’s bad for the SEC this empty suit will ok it.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. Sankey is right that this is bad for the sport, but his rationale is so broken. Regardless, in the end he will chase the money. The SEC will lose its championship game. There are pros and cons to that, but what is really sad to see will be the bowls still attempting to be relevant in this quagmire.

Sankey is no fool. This expansion to 24 team playoff would not be good for the whole SEC or its fans.
