ESPN College Football analyst Heather Dinich was on The Paul Finebaum Show and shared her thoughts on LSU's chances of making the playoff this year.

Dinich said that LSU's biggest question marks, besides winning out, are Ole Miss and Florida State. Per On3:
quote:

“I’ll just remind everybody that no two loss team has ever made the College Football Playoff. That certainly doesn’t mean they can’t,” Dinich told Finebaum. “I’ll go back to LSU last year, and we were talking about them until they lost in the SEC championship game. So, I think that when you look at LSU defensively, they have some questions. Can they play better, more consistently down the stretch?

“But to me, they’ve got to worry about Ole Miss. They’ve got to worry about Florida State. I mean, the head-to-head things come into play and the SEC West could be an interesting tiebreaker situation, quite honestly.”

“There are a lot of things that can continue to happen, but LSU’s biggest question mark as far as going all the way up might be what happens to Florida State,” Dinich continued. “That’s because that head to head at the beginning of the season will continue to matter, and it will probably continue to keep [FSU] ahead of LSU as long as Florida State doesn’t lose. If Florida State stumbles somewhere down the stretch, then it could be a question.”

I agree that FSU continuing to win is nothing but good for LSU. As the poster above mentioned, there are four teams in the playoff and not two.

As for Ole Miss, I really think it’s best for LSU that they win out other than the UGA game. That would be all that’s needed for LSU to jump them in the polls. And while Ole Miss would own head to head (on a last possession game), LSU would be 2-0 vs UGA and Bama compared to 0-2 to Ole Miss. would also have 11
Wins vs 10, and be SEC Champs.

If there were 2 teams in the playoff I understand what she is saying. But, there are 4 and Florida St will be one of them unless they totally crap the bed. We just need to be one of the other 3. Going to be difficult either way.

Ol' Piss will lose to A&M and Georgia. LSU stays undefeated, wins SEC Championship, and destroys FSU in CFP Championship. Word!

Nobody was talking about LSU going into the SEC Championship. We lost to A&M and were a 3 loss team. Bad take

For LSU, it would be better for Florida state to keep winning and be the #1 seed. It’s the B1G and PAC where chaos needs to happen.

If LSU wins out and finishes with 2 losses, I still don’t think there is room in the playoffs

Ohio St/Michigan winner
Washington/Oregon winner
Oklahoma/Texas Winner
Florida State

Obviously, that changes if one of those teams loses then beats the other. I also think a close victory over an undefeated UGA would not necessarily eliminate Georgia. Hope I’m wrong.

1-loss FSU would get in over a 2-loss LSU, what is she smoking?

Based on the Tiger Defense this season and our history vs Saban, it is fair to believe Bama will win this game at home. Weak defensive end and cornerback play will leave Tigers exposed. Thinking LSU finishes 8-4 this season with a bowl game soon

Why is LSU being penalized for playing an undefeated playoff team in their home state to start the season? Why would anyone schedule a non-conference game they could possibly lose under this system? Look at Michigan’s OOC. I understand the Ole Miss loss with an awful defensive showing was bad but if LSU shows improvement and closes the year with wins at Bama and over UGA, you’re telling me a “neutral” site loss in the opener to another playoff team should keep them out? I blame LSU for scheduling the game.

Not being penalized for playing. Being penalized for losing that one and another

LSU isn’t penalized for scheduling a tough game

They are penalized for being completely outclassed / run off the field

I think she is totally wrong here. the committee has never looked at schedule, just record. Cincy got in, ND got in, Clemson got in with the worst schedules imaginable. The bottom line is a 2 loss conference champ will not get in over a 1 loss non conference champ. We've seen this time and time again and as recently as last year. Now if every conference has every member with at least 2 losses it would then be possible but for now anybody with 2 losses is pretty much eliminated.

In 2017 10-2 Auburn was ranked #2 in the CFP going into the SECCG. Had they won, they were getting in ahead of non-conf. champs Wisconsin (12-1) and Alabama (11-1)

Last year 9-2 LSU was ranked #5 in the CFP poll going into the A&M game. Had they beaten A&M and Georgia to finish as an 11-2 SEC champ it is VERY likely they would have gotten in ahead of 11-1 Ohio St who didn't reach the Big 10 championship game.

Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't happen. Auburn and LSU were in position to do so...if they could have closed out the season with wins.
