LSU freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will take his redshirt year and not play in the next two games, Ed Orgeron said after practice on Thursday.

Freshman passer Matt O'Dowd will serve as Max Johnson back up for the ULM game on Saturday and the Texas A&M finale next week.

God I hope the transfer portal light does not come on again. There is still a lot to play for in the next two games

a lot to play for??? This season is an utter disaster. There's nothing to play for. It just needs to end without severe injuries.

What changed his mind in 7 or 8 days? Garret Nussmier went to Ed orgeron and said I want to play than he does not want to be the bench his freshman year. This message was a few days before the Arkansas game. His dad spoke to Ed orgeron as well and gold him let his son play.

No point really in playing the next two games. Hit the reset button and start the QB competition over next spring with the new coach

Unprecedented a player telling a coach don't play me I want to redshirt. So much for one team one heartbeat.

This isn't unprecedented at all. Why wouldn't he red shirt at this point? Having the option to be a 5th year senior makes way more sense than playing in mop up duty during ULM and possibly playing during the TAMU game.

Saving a year for transfer???

Didn't CEO come out shortly after the Arkansas game saying he thought the best decision was for Nuss to redshirt this year? How in the world is this Nuss dictating to O "how it's going to be"?

Good for him...he will NOT need the extra year...But Andrew Luck took a redshirt at Stanford

Depending on who is hired at LSU, also depending on what type offense will be run, maybe 50/50 on this ‘Family’ using the transfer Portal . I get the either/or thinking decision. Good luck GN !

How can people find this board, sign up, read enough to have a comment yet have zero idea what they are talking about ? Unreal ! The ONLY decision at this point for GN is to redshirt. Not doing so and burning a year of eligibility would be completely stupid.

The whole damn redshirt option is stupid. An enrolled student athlete should be eligible to play until he/she is no longer enrolled or has signed with an agent to become professional. Crazy azz world with stupid azz regulations.

"An enrolled student athlete should be eligible to play until he/she is no longer enrolled or has signed with an agent to become professional".... without a time limit, you'd have guys, not good enough for the NFL, playing in college for 10 years. Thus the "5 years to play 4" limit, which makes sense.

Nice to meet you, Matt O’Dowd. Congratulations, you’re now the best player on the roster.

I guess the reason given is not popping up in the "story" above. Can someone let me know what reason was given?

If he had looked and felt like he were ready last week, he would be burning that red shirt.

Johnson has played like he has no backup all season (and he hasn't apparently), why stop now?
