CBS Sports writer David Cobb recently graded college football rosters for Year 1 coaches and gave LSU and its new head coach, Lane Kiffin, an A-.

Ole Miss and Pete Golding received the highest grade at A+, followed by Penn State and Matt Campbell at A, and then Kiffin.

LSU: A-

Transfer class ranking: 1

Can a revamped offensive line headlined by No. 1-ranked offensive tackle transfer Jordan Seaton (Colorado) keep Sam Leavitt upright and improve the Tigers' moribund rushing attack? Those are the biggest questions surrounding LSU's first roster under Lane Kiffin. Leavitt is coming off an injury-shortened 2025 campaign at Arizona State and was heavily limited in spring practice. Kiffin assembled a great receiver room, but A+ level line play is no guarantee, as the Tigers' offensive line landed at 29th nationally in Phil Steele's unit rankings.

Transfer class ranking: 2

In a wild time of transition, upheaval and chaos, new coach Pete Golding appears to have nailed his first roster. With the backing of a strong NIL operation, the Rebels landed the nation's No. 2 transfer haul while also attracting top 25 high school class. What's most impressive, though, are the retentions. Heisman contenders return at quarterback (Trinidad Chambliss) and running back (Kewan Lacy). Key contributors are also back on all three levels of the defense for an Ole Miss team with aspirations of a second straight CFP appearance.

So LSU has the top Portal class, a top 10 HS recruiting class, and the #1 overall class. All better than Ole Miss. Yet, somehow Pete Golding grades better than Kiffin? What a joke, lol.

Well, that’s because ole miss has a damn good returning group of starters…LSU pretty much replaced the entire team.

Its more to do with the quality of the returning players. Mainly Chambliss & Lacy. Ole Miss is expecting both Lacy & Chambliss to have All SEC type seasons again but w/o Lane & Charlie all thats left is Pete & he will ensure that Ole Miss steps back into mediocrity where they’re most comfortable since thats what they’ve been for 50+ years now & counting ??

I feel like people are sleeping on our defense. Ty Benefield is a massive pickup. Whit is back, Pickett is going to continue to do the DBU thing. And we kept Blake Baker had those boys playing really well even through a pretty unremarkable season.

The defense will be nasty this year

Hopefully Baker has figured out that yes, quarterbacks in fact can run the football too.

This is the thing, we have the original Kiffin/Weis Jr. offense and Ole Piss will try to run a facsimile of our offense, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!!!

They’re setting up the drama all ready!

This goes to show you these national writers have no knowledge of the game at all. If they did any kind of homework they'd know under a LK system OL is extremely friendly to his system. It's very easy for adjustment here to see success somewhere just by his scheme. Guarantee someone like Davis who struggled under BK we'll immediately say where was this guy before?

Not trying to be argumentative but I don't necessarily agree. In a game a couple years ago against Ole Miss we inserted Harald Perkins and he destroyed their offensive line. And there was no scheming for it. it's literally how we took over and won the game. When asked after the game what happened kiffin basically said there was no answer for 40. So no even kiffin can't scheme away an offensive line that's getting whipped. All of these areas will be improved due to talent and coaching. I think expectations are probably a little over the top. The man hasn't coached a game and we're still very much in the honeymoon period.

We also dominated TOP 36 to 24 minutes, and kept the ball away from the Rebs offense. It wasn't just Perkins. We also had a guy named Jayden Daniels. That Ole Miss team wasn't that great. They lost 5 of their last 6 games, starting with us.
