On Monday, The University of San Diego fired head basketball coach Bill Grier after just eight season with the school.

Multiple sources are now reporting that LSU assistant basketball coach Eric Musselman, who is a USD alum is a popular name to replace Grier as head coach.

U-T San Diego also believes that Musselman is the leading candidate for the job and had this to say...
quote:

ERIC MUSSELMAN:
The leader in the clubhouse. He’s in his first year as an assistant at LSU after spending two years in a similar capacity at Arizona State. But he’s a USD alum, having played there in the mid-1980s, and has a long history as a head coach at the pro level, including the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings. He was most successful one step below, compiling a 400-155 record in U.S. minor leagues (CBA, USBL, D-League) where you have unlimited roster turnover. He is known as shrewd tactician and excellent game coach (he’s already had more than 900 games as a head coach, and he just turned 50), and he has privately coveted – and pursued – the USD job for years. He’s also coached foreign national teams, most recently Venezuela. The resume is impressive. The only question is his ability to recruit after only three seasons at the college level.

A lofty goal for TQ would be to improve his IQ over 60 next season.

All you Sunshine Pumpers really think that JJ is going to let a former NBA HEAD COACH take over the show and gain X & O control of the team? It's painfully obvious that not many of his ideas are making it through. He's wasting his time at LSU and would be much better off at San Diego!

Not a huge loss I don't think, I didn't really see his impact on the team this year. Not saying that is his fault, he may not have been allowed to. We may never know.

But we have such inexpert coaching.

Part of me is inclined to believe an ex two-time NBA head coach will hold out for greener pastures, but it's his alma mater...not to mention San Diego is an incredible city. still, he'll think this over with the national exposure LSU is going to get next season.

I was hoping Coach Musselman would be an important part of the LSU Tigers' lofty goals with TQ, Patterson, Hornsby, Simmons, Blakeney and possibly one of Martin/Mickey plus additional high profile recruits next year. At least that was my impression when Coach Jones hired him last year. Well...
