Garfield High School in Seattle protested the National Anthem before their game on Saturday. According to the Seattle Times, the team’s protest had to do with the rarely sung third verse of the Star Spangled Banner, which includes the line, “No refuge could save the hireling and slave; from the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.”
quote:

Stunned at the revelation and frustrated by their own experiences in modern-day America, the Bulldogs decided they wouldn’t stand for it anymore. The Garfield football team knelt in unison during the playing of the national anthem before its 52-9 Metro League win against West Seattle on Friday.

Being unpatriotic is so cool now with the kids.

Trying to improve one's country is as patriotic as one can be. Trying to maintain the status quo that devalues some but benefits oneself is unpatriotic and selfish as well.

In response to justustm2..... It is very unclear how this has improved our country. On the other hand it is quite clear how much this issue has divided the country and brought about anger on both sides..... But yea improvement.

Some of these punk kids, kopernecki or whatever that spoiled bastard's name is should educate themselves on the subject before making stupid "patriotic" statements. I'll bet they still think hands up, don't shoot really happened that way. .... You know what status quo is? It's allowing black people to kill black people in the lawless inner cities. BUT you know what will happen if the LEO tries to help the innocent? They will end up killing young black men. We sure as hell can't change THAT status quo now can we??? [rolleyes]

So...they protested a line they apparently don't understand. I suspect this is a public high school.

Why would it matter if it's a public school or private school. The protest is the same. The message is the same. You sound "entitled"

Since when has protest been unpatriotic? On everything some of you don't even understand the country you claim you love. We were founded on protest! We protested and fought against British taxation and rule. We threw tea into a harbor to protest for crying out loud. We fought wars for freedom because we protested their treatment of us and our rights for freedom. The irony is if he were kneeling for gun rights you halfbreeds would be championing him and using his cause to "patriotically protest" the current President and his administration. You're all hypocrites and don't even care to understand your fellow man. This is why things are continuing to get worse.

"halfbreeds"! HAHAHAAA Do you have any idea what that means? We are in the basket of deplorables, right? Earth to Y Star, if the idiot that started this patriotic protest gets his way we halfbreeds will have to convert or die. If you are a fig you won't be around to witness it. .... BTW, the when "We" protested British taxation it wasn't very patriotic to the existing g'ovt. You see the outcome?? You want that to happen here again?? Perhaps we understand our fellow man far better than an insignificant twerp like you may think. ..... and if you think this is about cops shooting black kids ..... [shakingheadindisgust]

You literally admit you want to keep the status quo of treating minorities as lesser than. Then we wonder why everybody thinks all people from the south are uneducated, gun loving racist and inbred.

YStar, you a racist ignorant bigot. Shut your mouth. Go to a different country if you don't like here......preferable a non-white country.

Do people in this great country even know what oppression is? The poorest of the poor in the USA are still in the top 5% of wealthiest humans on earth. The pure ignorance of what the USA offers to all in comparison to the rest of the world is mind boggling.

Interdasting manipulation of info. They dont live in other countries. They live here. The divide in this country is trending the wrong way.

It's great seeing the coach at the front of the line telling them all to kneel. If one of them didn't I wonder if he would have been benched for exercising his right to not kneel?
user avatar

This wasn't an individual citizen exercising his/her right to protest. This looks like it was organized by the coach based on his actions telling the players when to kneel. As a coach in the high school ranks, you have the ability to manipulate kids that don't fully understand the real world and the problems that go on. It's an empty gesture at best if each and every player in that line doesn't understand what exactly he is kneeling for. There is a time and place to protest. Having a high school coach on a Friday night instruct his team when and how to protest does nothing to help anyone.

People are still kneeling during the anthem?

The principal of that school should remind the coach that his job is to coach football, not to lead (or coerce) 16-18 year old kids into protest. Regardless of how you feel about the underlying issue, it isn't the place of a high school coach to do that.

Yeah! Supress their voice! That's what this country is all about, right? You guys don't even truly believe in what this country was built on...
user avatar
calicrawdaddy92 months
He didn't say suppress their voice, he is saying stop giving them the attention they crave. The act of kneeling during the national anthem is both disrespectful and degrading to both active and retired military. It brings attention only to the kneeler, not their issues with police. grow up!

Let's see now, less than 15% of the population now wants to change our national anthem that was written in 1812, during a war that preserved our freedom, that most folks take for granted, these days...and what rap song would you change it to?

I guess a British invasion into U.S. soil is not a fight for our freedom? Guess American History wasn't one of your stronger subjects...BTW, did you have any "STRONG" subjects, besides PE?

"Stunned at the revelation and frustrated by their own experiences in modern-day America" They are stunned by all of their free handouts and special privileges because they are black? Blacks receive more help than any other race and the ironic this is that blacks are the most racist group in all of America.
user avatar
bgtiger92 months
That line in the anthem is all the rage for people who want attention for their *cough BS cough* "oppression" ... What is harmful, hurtful, or even racist about that line?
user avatar
TigerDM92 months
Exactly what do high school kids that live in an area with a very small black population know about racism? Seattle 8%, Washington state 3.4% They only know what someone has told them, little to no real life experience. I've been to Seattle a few times and my question to the locals when they tell me what backwards racist they think we from the south are has been: Then why is our black population almost 10 times greater than yours?
