Yucatan/QR road trip. Ideas?

With the cheap flights into cancun I've been traveling to Isla Mujeres a lot.
I feel like trying something new.
I would like to hit Tulum, Bacalar and see at least two mayan sites and two cenotes.
Bacalar is a 5 hour drive from Cancun.
So that would be doable.
I have a total of a week. I haven't set travel dates yet. Thinking Aprl or May.
I'm a cheap traveler. The flight is less than $250. Ditto on the car. Gas is expensive in Mexico.
Lodging I would look to spend $40-80 a night for airbnb.
I don't want to do cozumel, cancun or touristy hot spots. I may, may go to Holbox for a day to look into it. But don't really want to do an island thing this trip. Like I'll not go to Isla. I may go to places like Vallodolid , Puerto morales, possibly Meridia.
But with a week I want at least 3 major regions.
Bacalar has been recommended to me by many Mexicans.
Tulum by many Americans, so both of those are on the list and will cover cenotes.
I'll be going back in July with others, but that trip us only Isla Mujeres. When is hot, yes, but best beach weather.

Keep driving south and you’ll find yourself in Belize

Thanks. My eventual goal is to relocate to Mexico in retirement. Or points further south.
I figure in about 10 years I'll have enough invested to live a Mexican life. I want to retire eventually and that will never happen if I stay in the states.
I need to cut my living cost by a 1/4. Ideally I want to open a bed and breakfast in some quaint area of Mexico or Columbia.
I've been really heavy into studying what is required to move to Mexico.
If I could figure out a digital nomad job I would move sooner.
.
So I'm really looking for little places to land.

we are retiring this time next year and hope to spend winters somewhere in Mexico though I doubt I’ll want to buy something
two goals…learn Spanish and find a quiet town to lay low in

Renting seems more flexible. But then I see things like this for sale and I can see myself running it. ..

Check out Sin Duda Villas in Xcalak. Small bed and breakfast on the water. Originally designed built and ran by an Architect and his wife from Seattle. They sold to regulars from Canada who live and work there currently

Went there in May last year. I did Uxmal in 2015.
I've never done Tulum so I'm leaning towards that.
I do like Valladolid a lot, that's the city near Citchen Itza.
I really enjoy swimming in Cenotes, so I want to go to a couple of those.

Oh wow, that area looks amazing. Pretty far south but looks great. It's south of Mahahaul but looks up my alley. 3 day minimum stay though. I only want two days. If they say yes I'm booking it, if not I found another hut down the beach.

Glad you’re living the life man. I know you used to work your arse off.

Puerto Morelos has become the annual spot for my wife and I. Great snorkeling, beach clubs, excellent restaurants and cenotes are close by. The port side of PM is all walkable and houses/condos are very reasonable. Much smaller and chiller that Isla or Tulum. I would definitely not miss it.

PM and Bacalar are my two must see spots for the trip I'm planning.
I was going to go to Mahahaul but I've been there on a cruise and may just go to Bacalar.

Tulum is great if you like riding around an ATV mad max style. Plus seeing half naked hot European chicks everywhere is also a bonus

I have been to a bunch of the Mayan ruins in Mexico and throughout Central America. The most substantial one that I have been to was Chitzen Itza and we did it as a day trip from Cancun. This was a long time ago when they used to let you climb to the top of the big pyramid which you can’t do anymore.

Chichen is overly commercial now. I went there a few months ago. It was neat to see. I got a lot of good pictures. But it amazed me how many vendors are all over that area.
I'm looking more into Coba style places this trip.

did you ever hit the coba ruins? I think I recommended it on one of your early mexico posts.

No. I'm going to hit them up next trip that I'm planning now.

My son and I went a few years back. Flew to Cancun and rented a car. Drove the coast to Mahaual and scuba dived for a week. Stopped by Bacalar and Chetumal for a day trip. Really neat towns. Saw a Mennonite farmer and his wife speed walking behind him trying to keep up walking through the streets of Chetumal. It was the most unexpected thing I’ve ever seen.
Great trip. Came back up to Valladolid and on to Chichen Itza for the day. Drove back to Cancun later that night.
We drove back on the side roads because we were out of Mexican money and didn’t want to find an exchange for the toll road back to Cancun. I don’t know HOW many topos we ran over and little towns we loped through that night but it took forever to get back to Cancun.
