Never been to Greece, but I really want to go. Looks beautiful.

I worked in the south of France for several years. Lived on the Mediterranean in the tiny village of Carro west of Marseille. I really enjoy the French coast from Carro over to Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. It is especially beautiful in the calanques between Marseille and Cassis. Not a bad drive to Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon, Gordes, Pont du Gard, Nimes. Lots to see. If you stayed in Aix, it is an easy drive (by my standards) to make day trips to all of those places and the beaches.

Had two bad experiences in Nice, one of which was theft - although I’m sure there are crooks waiting to break into cars everywhere. Can’t recommend it personally, but people seem to enjoy it.

Sardinia.

Better beaches.
Better food.
Better wine.

EVERYONE hates the French except Louisiana people that have some weird affinity for the place despite their ancestors leaving because it sucked.

Between the two, Greece all day.

Sardinia is a good recommendation. I’d throw in Spain into the mix also. Closer. Easier. And sea/food/wine all great.

I don't know about the beaches in Portugal, but TAP usually has some good deals from major US cities.

I would def try to work both in, since there are plenty of small EU airlines that have fantastic fares for inter EU travel. Drive to Dallas and fly out of there to either France or Greece and get a regional airline to travel to the other country. Also, look at trains between the two, for a great adventure.

A train from Nice to Athens would take 44 hours

And, you stop at small towns in between. Did it this summer between southern Spain and France. Great way to really get into local culture.

That's a very different trip from what OP and (especially) his wife are interested in.
