I’ve been like 12 times for work.

I’ve never gotten sick once, but I don’t usually eat street food.

If you order it hot, you won’t be able to eat it.

When is spring break? In April it will be 108 and humid. January is the best weather.

It’s not America or Europe.

There is abject poverty, welcome to the real world. There is also a unique dynamism, a huge middle class and the very rich.

Get local guides, never ever try to drive yourself.

I would go to Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan, a hill station or two. Maybe a cricket match.

Oberoi Hotels are the best in the world

I went to Tamil Nadu for a wedding with some locals. We spent three nights in a hill station resort which was lovely. Everything else sucked terribly.

We landed at the airport in Madurai and within 1 km of leaving it we saw a dead dog on the side of the road being eaten by other dogs, cows eating trash and people just sitting among all that. It was the most squalid and depressing place I have ever been. It was the first place I’d ever been where I felt that if I got separated from my guide that I would never find my way home. Multiple times me and my two friends were stopped for pictures because white folks were a spectacle down there. I’m sure there are some nice parts up north but man Tamil Nadu was sad, poor, and absolutely filthy

first time?

Saw this in Cusco, Peru as well. My wife was getting over an illness so I did NOT point it out.

I have only been to Bangalore (and Dabaspet).

It is neat to do once - I would not likely bring my wife or kids.

Training the Jeets to take over your job? Big Oil is all about that. My friends that have been dispatched there for training their replacements did not enjoy the experience, First Class flights and nice hotels notwithstanding.

I’d pick someplace else.

Looking at Spring Break 27’. Myself, the Missus and our 14yo son.

Don’t do it.

Everyone I know who has made that trip has been disappointed.

Dirty place. Made them long for the urine soaked streets of the French Quarter.

Some family members who visited for a wedding described how monkeys are like aggressive squirrels and would swarm them. They might have learned that the clean smelling people are generous with food.

One of our friends came back with serious health problems that lingered for years. The US medical community had no idea what he was experiencing. Years later they decided to treat it like he had been infected with a parasite. He got better. I forget how many years he suffered, but they will definitely never go back.

But I hear some of the buildings are cool.

Mid-March…. Moderate temps in the 80’s. We’d hit during the Holi celebrations. Reached out to Turban Adventures as someone recommended. They seem on top of it. We’re definitely considering making the trip. We’re not rookies and know how to take the good with the bad. The 14yo son has been watching old episodes of Bourdain and seems excited the potential adventure.

I will be the opposite...

Is India overcrowded? Yes Is it dirty? Yes Is their abject poverty? Yes

But the country is so unique and I believe worth a trip.

Taj Mahal - not sure how you can call it overrated...it can be 120 degrees and the buildings are cool inside due to the engineering

(get a tour, take the train there (do not drive))

Agra also has its own Red Fort like New Delhi that is worth the visit.

New Delhi - Red Fort, Humayan Tomb, etc The restaurants around the Jama Masjid in Old Delhi are great

Kerala - the old Portuguese area with some fun beaches for your teenage son and they have beef to eat..and lots of little excursions

Mumbai - I like the city but it is more business oriented

I have been going there since 2009 and only once got Delhi Belly...but it is something you will never forget. It is some of the best food I have ever had in my life and some of the best smells when they have their flowers. But also some of the worst smells and poverty I have ever seen. If you are someone who cannot turn away, maybe not for you.

I can speak also to Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, etc if interested...

But I think you do it...

id probably have 100 places on my list before India, but to each is own and you obviously have the money.

My coworkers have to go 1x a year to do quality control on our call centers. They dread it every year. Each of them have missed more than a week after returning for stomach issues or some sort of sickness.

Have only heard bad things about India especially the sewer issues and the poverty. I’ve worked around a lot of expats in the Middle East that come from India and are very annoying people lol

Just remembered, there was a pretty interesting documentary on Netflix by the BBC called "The Story of India" that you might want to watch.

There were some other ones as well that would follow the city gold scavengers and the like on YouTube I believe.
