Trying to plan some trip in early May and found a round trip to Munich for under 650. I'll probably be going solo and I only get a week off. I'll get 8 nights there. Should I try a second major city close by(been to Barcelona and Prague) or should I just stay there and explore Bavaria by train? I see Bayern has a home match but besides that I don't have any must dos. Kinda started exploring this morning?

Any under the radar day trips?

Salzburg and Innsbruck are both not far away.

You have all the small towns around there in Austria, Bad Ischi, Hallstatt, etc. Can go to Berchtesgaden and go to Eagle's Nest

Dachau is very interesting outside of Munich.

Also agree with the Eagle's Nest and Innsbruck.

I think you can still ski the Stubai Galcier outside Innsbruck in May. South Tyrol is also pretty awesome, great valleys and a lot of vineyards. Eagle's nest is definitely worth the trip.

There is also some great high hiking in Innsbruck you can get to from the city center.

A must do. Salzburg is a day trip but I'd spend the night.

Nuremburg and its old town, plus Nazi rally grounds, are another day trip that you could spend the night.

Dachau is also at least a half day.

So much to do down there that you won't have a problem filling up the itinerary.

Definitely enough in Munich/Bavaria and nearby Salzburg to keep you occupied for a week. Take a side trip to Hohenschwangau to see Mad King Ludwigs castle, go to Berchtesgaden, get out into the countryside.....it's a beautiful part of the world.

Yes May 5-13. No itinerary my friend has to finalize his grad school final schedule so I’m seeing when he’ll be there. Probably just drinking beer in Munich the first two nights. Bayern has a match the 12th but there has to be a way to get cheaper tix than StubHub (300 min). We did Barcelona 2 years ago and got in for 100

Salzburg is a great place. One of my favorite towns.

Early May is the in-between season. Skiing is over and hiking not started yet. So might as well drink beer.

I spend a lot of time in Fieberbrunn, Austria(just east of Kitzbuhel). I sent a buddy of mine an inquiry about how to get tickets. Let you know what he says.

Congrats on the trip...

We're heading to Bavaria the last week in March and have been twice before so we can lend some recs.

For your first two nights, make Munich your home spot: see Marienplatz/Frauenkirche/Residenz, etc...and probably the best way to do much of this is a Mike's Bike Tour. All the top spots in about 4 hours. You even go to the Englischer Garten for the Chinese Tower biergarten and the surfers. A good orientation to the city.

Perhaps the best biergarten in the city is Augustiner Keller by the train station...our favorite in town is the one at the Viktualienmarkt near the city center (taps rotate among the six city breweries). Any Augustiner place will be worth visiting.

Dachau is a moving, worthwhile trip, which we followed up the heaviness with a visit to Weihenstephan Brewery in Freising (claims to be the oldest in the world, dating from 1040).

We are meeting friends in Fussen which is a good jump-off-spot for seeing Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau castles. If the weather's right, we'll visit at least Neuschwanstein. Touristy yes, but some pretty incredible views especially from Marienbrucke.

Salzburg is definitely worth a couple nights. This trip, we are staying two nights there. The first day, our plans are to enjoy Getreidegasse, the fortress & Augustiner Braustubl (my favorite biergarten ANYWHERE). Our second day may include a train day east (Hallstatt, etc...we've stayed there a night but may just hop around town-to-town). Eagle's Nest is likely out for us due to weather, but I'd be making the trip if it were summer.

Nurnberg, Innsbruck, Garmisch/Partenkirchen are also other day-trip or one night stop ideas.

With cheap train tickets like Munchen XXL or Bayern ticket, you can be flexible with these day-trips. Often for 25 or 30 Euros total, a group up to 5 can travel all day/night on one pass.

Soccer-wise, we've arranged with a friend for close to face-value Bayern/Dortmund tickets, and yes they are expensive if using Viagogo or some other site. Your match would be against Stuttgart, the final match day of the season, when they'll be doing their traditional Paulaner beer shower celebrations on the field and raising the league trophy. Often a tough ticket as far as I understand. As a Bayern supporter that's a sight I wouldn't miss, so if you can find decent tickets, don't miss it.

Our last two nights, we are staying in Ismaning which is close to the Allianz Arena and the airport.

This is spring equivalent of Oktoberfest and my preference (been 4 times) as it is mainly Germans vs the crowds of September.

It is in the same location as the Oktoberfest.

Echo what others have said, go to Eagles Nest. Loved the views and the area. You can then continue on to Salzburg from there. I would not spend more than 2 days there.

If you like outdoors, here is my review that covers Garmisch which may be worth a day (Partnachklamm and Zugspitz were great):

And Nuremberg opens its Summer in the City which is a great place for drinks and people watching after touring around the city all day

LINK /

I would spend 3 days in Nuremberg.

There's a ton to do in the Alps, my recommendation would be to rent a car for 4-5 days. With just 2 of you, a very small compact car will be $30-40/ day. That's not going to be any more than train tickets to 2-3 places and will give you a ton more options.

Definitely check out the extreme sports like canyoning, rafting, sky diving. I highly highly recommend canyoning, but that may be too early for it there as the rivers are likely high from snow melt.

Check out the ice cave outside of Saltzburg. As said, Saltzburg is maybe a 2 night place. It's a pretty small town.

Bike tours especially for 1-2 people is a great way to see cities, weather in May should be great for it too.

All of the King Ludwig castles are worth a stop.

Thanks for the posts guys. The spring festival is something I didn’t know about and looks awesome. Glad I’ll get to experience that

My Austrian buddy said that price is kinda steep. He said it is really hard to get tickets these days but recommended going to the club page.

I would suggest asking your hotel to see if they can concierge you some tickets. It worked out pretty good for me in Rome. Wanted to see the pro tennis matches and they came through with some really nice tickets.

Not sure if the Kehlsteinhaus(Eagle's Nest) will be open in early May. It all depends on the amount of snow.

I don't get why so many go to this area and miss Linderhoff, Newschweinstein, and Garmish.

A morning drive to Neuschwanstein and stopping for beers/pig knuckle at the Andechs monastery and brewery late in the day is a perfect day trip from Munich. It only sucks for the designated driver (which was me for our trip).

Just want to thank everyone for the advice. Just got back from 8 nights and had an amazing time. Spring festival was a great drunken time. Saw all the main city sites, and did day trips to Neuschwanstein, Dachau, and Salzburg. Wound up getting last minute tickets to the Bayern match and it was a fun experience despite the home team getting wrecked.

Would definitely spend some more time in the area.
