Like every big city, there are pockets that are not aesthetically-pleasing. That's not exclusive to SF. If you think it's a "gross place," you're not taking time to explore anything outside of Tenderloin and parts of SoMa and Mission.

Providence RI has a really cool self guided tour of old money mansions. Vanderbilt's and whatnot used to use Providence as their summer homes.

I have been to every city listed on this thread except Buffalo and everyone, like any place you visit, will be what you make of it. You can find greatness or squalor anywhere or everywhere. I personally loved all of them because they were all great places to visit and soak in America. Being from down under...you gonna have a great trip!!

Pro tip: There is a cool coffee shop on the North End next to Mike's if you like java!
