Ireland is an absolutely GORGEOUS country. I've never seen so many shades of green. You can't really go wrong with wherever you decide to go, but a few of my favorite places outside of Dublin were the Dunloe Gap (stayed in a beautiful hotel with AMAZING views of the gap), Killarney National Park, Galway, and the Jameson distillery in Midleton. Did the Blarney stone just to say I did it, but wasn't anything special IMO.

We also did a tour of an apple farm in Co. Cork that was really, really cool, and then a herding dog demonstration.

My favorite place we stayed on the trip was Dromoland Castle. Very, very awesome architecture and tons of things to do on the grounds. Had quite an interesting experience there one night that seemed to align with the claim that the place is "haunted"

The people are excellent, welcoming, and like to talk, but good luck understanding some of them. Last thing, I was absolutely blown away with how beautiful the women were. I was not prepared for that level of talent.

Yeah, Belfast It was my favorite part of my Ireland trip. A lot of cool things to see a short distance from there. I think we were in Ireland for 8 days, and one was my sister’s wedding. It’s definitely possible to drive around the country in that amount of time and not rush.

I went to Belfast for a friend’s wedding. The entire thing was basically a game of “how drunk can we get the Americans?” for the locals.

The Irish I met certainly lived up to a few stereotypes that week.

I booked my stays.

Flying into Dublin on the 14. Rent car and drive to Athlone. One night there. Drive to Galway. Two nights there. Then drive to Dingle for one night, then Limerick for one night then Cashel then back to Dublin.
Galway, cliffs of Moher and Dingle will be highlights. Mostly staying on the west side of the island.
Not really interested in Dublin but will explore the last day there.

Where are you staying at in Athlone? Are you doing a B&B in Galway?

The cliffs of Moher are awesome, but you only need about an hour to see them. The longer walking path that goes outside of the viewing area was closed for repair in June so you couldn’t hike any further. If possible, take the ferry to Inishmore that day as well and explore. Well worth it.

Also, there is a pitch and putt in Doolin by the ferry five minutes from the Cliffs of Moher. Fun to play if you’re into golf.

A coupe of recs for Dingle-
The Fish Box is a great fast-casual seafood joint. They have a boat that goes out daily and basically whatever he brings in is what’s on the menu. No frills but fresh local fare. We got takeaway from there then walked over to the picnic tables behind Dick Mack’s pub to eat. They have their own beer and I went in and grabbed a pint, tiny little bar that has been visited by all sorts of dignitaries. Seeing the old Irishmen crammed in the tiny bar and listening to their accents was an amazing memory for me. Enjoyed our local meal then hit Murphy’s ice cream and walked along the harbor.
In that area is another small restaurant I think called St. James or St. John’s pub or something. Right on the harbor- we had a great lamb stew and bannoffee pie there.

Dingle was my favorite spot of our whole trip. The Slea Head drive is a must. And good for you for springing for the automatic, I did the same. I wasn’t going to try left handed shifting AND being on the wrong side of the road :)

Nap,
I highly recommend Clonmacnoise (15 miles, about 25 minutes drive SSW of Athlone)

Easily walkable, beautiful.

I’m in the skip Blarney Castle group.

There's a boat that goes up the river from Athlone to visit Clonmacnoise. I think it leaves from close by the "world's oldest bar" so it's a good way to pair those two if the tourist boat is still running.

So it's really pretty here. Easy to get around. Driving in the wrong side of road isn't bad. I'm glad i got the automatic though. Lots of hills. I did drive 100km in the dark and rain last night and it was a little scary. Especially on a single lane road and then having a semi truck come at me. They don't have shoulders just road and then bushes.
Cliffs of Moher were amazing. We got catfished by "a castle stay" in Galway. Very sketchy. Decided to take an L and just leave a day early. Skipped my food tour as well so going to Dingle a day early then ring of Kerrry tomorrow and on to Limerick.
Food and drinks have been good.

People are nice. Charlie Kirk and gun violence is often brought up.
The radio has lots of pro palestine talk too which I'm not used to. Can't avoid politics even on vacation i Guess. . ..
It's very green. So far the best part was the farmhouse i rented outside Athlone. Had acreage and it was so cool walking up to a field of friendly dairy cows .

Amazing how compact the country is. Plus so many castles to stop at.

The wife and I are going to N. Ireland in April for 10 days. I specified N. Ireland because we are house sitting for someone and also watching their dog so we won't have complete freedom of movement. Hopefully the dog like car rides so we can visit SW Ireland while we're there.
