My wife and I are going to be in Orlando for the ICast convention next month and will have a few extra free days. The obvious is to visit a few Disney Parks or Universal on those days. We've both been to Disney a few times and don't have kids, is there anything else worth seeing or doing in that area?

I go there every year for work. The answer is nothing. That place is a chain haven made for families lugging around 10 year olds. It's going to be hot and humid AF as well.

What do you like to do in your free time? You could head over to Cape Canaveral and check out NASA stuff or the beaches that way. There is a ton of shopping options.

Your best bet is to make sure your hotel or resort has a nice pool with a bar and just hang out. Its July, gonna be hot as hell and busy as hell. I'd do a mini vacation "all inclusive but not" resort stay and just hit the pool, sleep in, and relax honestly.

What kind of activities do you like? Crystal river is like 1.5 hours a way, maybe less. Its a couple of springs next to their bay there that the manatees go to in the winter time as the water is warmer in the winter then the gulf. The manatees will mostly be gone, but the swimming is nice. There's some other nice rivers there to float in central florida. That's the only thing out of the box I can think of.

ETA: I don't know shite about it, but there's also Jai Alai. They may have a season? No idea of where its located but my friends at UF used to go.

My brother and sister in law use to live there.

They never did anything in Orlando. You either go west to Tampa or east to Cocoa.

Orlando kind of sucks and it’s gonna be 110 heat index

Go eat at 4 Rivers BBQ. Awesome

I know you want to avoid Disney and US but they both have very cool dining and shopping districts outside of the parks. Disney Springs is awesome

Yep. Old downtown Disney is great. Was better with the pleasure island clubs years back.

Go eat at Charlie’s steakhouse. I have a plaque on the wall with my name
On it. Steaks are great.

Download the Kennedy Space Center app. Check the flight schedule and reserve a spot at one of the viewing centers if this falls in line with your plans. Nothing cooler than watching a launch, especially the SpaceX Falcon heavy with the returning boosters. Visit the Cocoa Beach area restaurants near the cruise ships for fresh seafood, or charter a trip yourself. Some really good fishing in that area. Stay at a local place on the beach.

Absolutely! Grew up in Central Florida and lived in Orlando for 12 years. Don't let Mickey take all your money.

Outdoor types? Go tubing at Rock Springs! One of the prettiest places in Florida and maybe 45m from Disney. Mid week and early mornings are best due to potential crowds. LINK

Go downtown and walk around Lake Eola. The Thornton Park area has some nice restaurants and bars you could walk to or try out later.

Drive to the beach. Canaveral National Seashore is maybe 1 1/2 hours away and it's a straight shot.

That should be some nice alternatives. And we haven't even talked about going to Universal Studios, which you should try as well.

Shoot me an email Mark: fishingfloridaradio@gmail.com I've been here for 20 years now and haven't been to either Disney or Universal in over 15 years except to go to a few restaurants so I can't help there LOL

Will be going to ICast daily and would like to meet up with you.

4 Rivers is not what it used to be at all. Overall BBQ in Orlando blows.

Gatorland & Blue Springs are cool.

Scallop season will be open, it's an hour and half to Homosassa. Sure I'll think of some more.......I'v

Daytona and Cocoa beach are both less than an hour away. Also, eat at Giordanos in Orlando.

If you're not watching the food budget too close, Ravenous Pig is a really nice dinner spot... LINK /

In town, Tako Cheena is a *great* cheap eats spot with latin/asian fusion tacos and arepas.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

Shame there will be no launches scheduled while we are in town at Kennedy Space Center, would have loved to see that. We are staying at Hyatt Regency Orlando which looks to have a nice pool area, so I guess that will be our fall back plan if we come up short on sights to see.
