I have a business trip to Vienna in June and taking a week or so vacation with wife after the conference.
What are some recommendations for areas to visit within about 8 hours drive? Czech is one option we’ve considered with extended family living there.
Been to Italy many years ago and really liked Venice, day or two there would be nice if it fit with other locations we haven’t experienced.

Salzburg, of course.
And, on the way to Salzburg, take the road that runs along the bank of the Danube River. The wine country along that route between Vienna and Melk is gorgeous.
Those are short and easy day trips.

Eagles Nest, Hitler’s Austrian hideaway, is interesting.

I have spent a lot of time in that area. Besides what was already mentioned:
Budapest (a must imo)
Prague
Bratislava (it's just ok)
Krakow
Slovenia is close
Go to Steiereck in Vienna if you can.

I will also be in Vienna in June, planning to take a day trip to Budapest. When we leave Vienna taking a train to Prague, staying there for a few days.

Where in Italy have you been? I would stay in the alps personally, tons to do there. All kinds of options.
What are you interested in doing?

The Kehlstein Haus(Eagle's Nest) is not in Austria.

I went...it was a short bus ride over the border from Salzburg. It was worth the trip.

You can hit Bratislava in a day. But definitely recommend Salzburg and Munich

Slovenia-Bled, Ljubljana, Bohinj, Maribor, lipizaner stud farm, great hiking, castles. Budapest is good for several days and a short, comfortable bus ride.

I have gone 3 times and it is still not in Austria. The Documentation Center and "bus Station" are in Obersalzberg, Germany.
kehlsteinhaus
It is a little over a mile from the Austrian border.
A boat ride on Koenigsee is also nice.

I found Vienna to be the worst city I visited over there. Prague was our favorite. Krakow/Bratislava/Budapest were all awesome.
