Not Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.
I just want to breathe the air and relax.
Which towns have you visited that are more sedate?

Fontana Dam. Quaint, remote, quiet little town next to several big lakes at the southern terminus of the park. And only a 3 mile hike up to Shuckstack firetower (see below). The Dam is awesome. The leaves will definitely be changing. Also only a 2 hour drive away from Asheville if you wanted to make it a multi-stop trip

Blowing Rock.
Second Highlands/Cashier.
Have you considered Blue Ridge in Georgia? We go there all the time. Also look up Amicalola Falls State Park.

Little Switzerland, NC
We stopped there this past spring on a trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Blowing Rock. It is not really a town but there is a hotel, a restaurant and some shops. But it may be hard to get a room now and they close in early November.

Those pictures were taken where that red dot is. Just of the BRP.
Blowing Rock is a small town but it may be crowded with leaf lookers now. It is about 10 miles from Boone where App State is.
You also might check out West Jefferson, NC or Abingdon, VA.

I second Little Switzerland. Look in to Alleghany County, NC... Laurel Springs. The area around Mt. Mitchell is also nice. I prefer the Blue Ridge Pkwy to the Smokies. I grew up right by both. Rent a cabin by a creek with a wood burning fireplace (not in a village or community), and enjoy the peace and quiet. It’s a great trip.

I’m currently on the way to Bryson City, looks like the perfect little town. Will report back in a couple days.

We (me, wife, 3 kids 7-13) spent a week in Bryson City. Cabin was slightly remote, as in we could see only forest and mountain from the deck, about 10 minutes outside Bryson City. Easy driving to Gatlinburg, Asheville, Highlands and everything in between. 15-20 minutes from the Deep Creek entrance to GSMNP. We would stay there again.
That said, we'd rather I think stay in Bryson City or outside of a slightly larger town. We like to drink at dinner. We don't like to cook, but rather, prefer to eat out on vacation. Drinking at dinner and hairy-assed winding narrow mountain roads don't go together real good.
ChaseMac - Jimmy Mack's and Pasquelino's were both delicious meals. Jimmy Macks had the best non-steak house steak I've had in a long time.

Seasonal but you can still get into the..
Pisgah Inn
Stayed here a few years ago and it was wonderful. Might be getting too cold to try Sliding Rock but what the hell!

I double that. We always stay in cabin in Laurel Valley in Townsend. Went to Cashiers and loved it and picked apples and zip lined close by.
