Wife and I just took our last SWA flights a couple of weeks ago. The gate agents were telling people ahead of time that late B and C groups wouldn't have overhead space. All bags checked for free if you went see the gate agent. I guess that's the cheat code. I didn't notice boarding taking any longer than usual though.

I still think airlines should charge to carry on bags instead of charging to check them. That would speed up the boarding process.

With technology have a virtual scan that check carry on size and beeps if the bag is oversized. Then automatically charge the card on file for boarding pass and gate check the bag. That would eliminate the space issue and people trying to scam the system

No, it won’t. There is a bag sizer in front of every gate, on every airline, and it doesn’t help.

Because how many attendants use it?

but the real issue is the FAs not monitoring people putting their backpacks in the overheads instead of under the seat.
I only travel on planes with a backpack and don't bring a suitcase as a carry on. Why should I never understood why I should have to cram my backpack down below my feet and don't get access to the same overhead bin space that everyone else does

The overhead bins are designed to be used for those items that cannot fit under the seat in front. There is simply not enough room for every traveler to put one piece of luggage up there regardless of size.

I'd rather stuff my carry-on full and avoid the backpack altogether than have it down by my feet.

The country needs a reckoning to make private (lite) aviation more tenable as a business. Flying commercial has gotten almost unbearable. I get the american psyche about terror attacks is tough to overcome, but we are at no greater risk of being attacked on an airplane than we are at the mall, a church, a school etc.

I'm still not sure why it should be my problem that people want to bring massive rolling carry ons when my backpack will fit nice and easily in the spot over my seat

Its only your problem if your bag does fit under the seat in front of you, regardless of what anyone else does. If you want to avoid that problem, bring a carry-on that won't fit under the seat in front of you. It's an easy fix.

I switched to the 35L Backpack Islanders Savvy which has a clamshell opening and easily fits shoes, personal items, macbook, etc. and my feet area has been clear ever since.

You were given access. You chose not to use it by using a bag that's fits under the seats in front of you.

Nah, they're designed for whatever luggage I want to put up there, regardless of whether it fits under the seat in front of me or not. But it's definitely not for the oversized coats everyone else packs in the winter.

I'm short so I want a bag at my feel to put my feet on or they are not comfortable.

I’ll chime in as I just flew SWA from MSY to LAS. I have a southwest Visa card. We had just about enough points so that’s how I bought the ticket. I have the free checked bag so I used that for my golf clubs. They do offer free gate check for carryons and in fact request passengers to use it. Since I was already going to have to wait at the carousel I was more than happy to do it so all I had to board was a small backpack. If I only had the carryon and the backpack I would not want to check it for time purposes upon landing.
I’m the guy rapid fire checking in right when you can 24 hours out so I got b15 there and b15 on return. Although I had a free upgrade to a1-15 I decided to hold on to it. I sat row 9 on the aisle both legs in the better legroom seats. Any past the exit rows you can tell the seats are a little squeezed. Overall I’ve always been a fan of SWA and their system and personally sorry to see the policies changing. Both flights were nonstop,
on time, pleasant, and drama free. I don’t get the hate but then I’m pretty easy and far from rich

Did you fly on a newly configured plane, because the seats are the same size/legroom throughout the current setups?
