Travel warning for those wanting to visit San Francisco.

This was in the news today.

"Hundreds of government employees in San Francisco told to work from home due to the high levels of crime in the area."

There was a thread on here last week about places you enjoyed visiting but don’t care to go back to. This was my answer. And it is a shame because it is one of the most beautiful cities in America with a great food scene.

Reality check:

San Francisco 2022 homicide rate = 6.9 per 100,000.

New Orleans 2022 homicide rate = 74.3 per 100,000.

Yeah we get it. But there is more at play here than the homicide rate. SF is so fricked up compared to what it was.

SF is the most dangerous city in terms of violent crime per square mile.

But I'll avoid both like the plague.

Most people who think that someplace is "too dangerous" to travel to are clueless, actually. Most people lack any real ability to evaluate comparative risk and live significant parts of their lives guided by inordinate fear.

Of course, but you cited in homicide rates, which isn’t necessarily the best standard.

Went in April.

Never really felt “unsafe”.. obviously did my homework on where to avoid and the things to do around the city etc. they have some IG accounts you can follow that show daily robberies etc all the time… it is truly crazy, but aside from an Uber drive we took one night after dinner where the local Uber driver prob knew the area better so he was good, I don’t think we ever felt unsafe.

I do think it is in bad shape, and just like Nola… but also similar to both, you have risks when traveling everywhere. You just have to be aware of your surroundings and not be unaware of what could occur.

I would definitely travel back to SF today with its current state.

I was in SF last month
It was delightful and we had a blast. One of the only major cities I’ve been to that I would consider living in (not that I could afford it)

That's an absolutely wild take. My lib brother in law was even talking about how bad it is living there these days. If I had the money to afford to live in SF I would live just about anywhere else. I went in 2019 and had a great time, but went back in later 2021 and it had really gone downhill.

To the poster with the murder rate, it's a completely feeling of being "unsafe" in San Fran. I don't worry about getting a gun put to my head like in NOLA, just that I might get mugged by a junky, which is a lesser of two evils. It's sad that what should be two of the best cities in the US have fallen so far.

I'm in the SF Bay Area ~15x/year for work. In my industry, more-and-more client dinners and networking events are being held outside of SF. In the last year, I've gone into SF just twice. The networking events that used to be in SF, are now in San Jose. SoMa, Tenderloin and parts of Mission are an absolute mess, which, unfortunately, is where most hotels are. However, plenty of neighborhoods (i.e. Lower Haight, Bernal, Castro, Noe Valley, Cow Hollow / Pac Heights) around SF are still great to visit - tourists just don't really go to those areas.

I don't mind visiting SF these days, but it's more about knowing where to go because most of the immediate downtown area is a total cluster frick.

I'm going out there for the Auburn-Cal game. Several years ago I had planned to make an extended SF trip out of it, visiting friends and soaking up the city. But the friends moved away and the city has really gone downhill and taken a different vibe.

Instead I'm going to do Yosemite and maybe Monterey then hit Berkeley for game day. I have no desire to spend any time in SF proper, which is a shame because I used to like the city. To be fair, I've already done the main tourist draws but there's nothing wrong with going back for seconds.

I've heard countless stories from other Auburn fans planning to make the trip. Wine country and other outskirts are fine, but the modern downtown experience is a dealbreaker. If that's indicative of the state of affairs for the tourism industry, that city has problems.
