Going to San Fran next month for a conference. I will be there 2 days by myself and 1 day with the wife (then headed to Napa).

What are your favorite things to do? Alcatraz worth it? Recommendations for casual dinners?

While in San Francisco:
Catch a Giants game
Take NIGHT tour of Alcatraz
Take SF Bay cruise under GG Bridge
Whale watching
Visit Fisherman's Wharf
Lombard Street

On the way to Napa stop in Sausalito (across the Bay from SF on way to Napa) and then the Muir Woods

I enjoyed the Alcatraz tour. Any interest in catching a Giants game if they are in town?

Check out Golden Gate Bridge. Take the trolley.

Park on the SF side and walk across and back. Free and phenomenal.

Giants are out of town but perhaps Golden States playoff schedule will cooperate.

In the must do category:

1. Golden Gate Bridge. Either walk it or bike it.
2. Muir Woods. Words can't adequately describe a red wood forest.
3. Alcatraz.

In the optional category:

1. Trolley ride and walk through Chinatown.
2. Beach Blank Babylon. Take the wife. LINK

Also go to the Filbert Steps by Coit Tower and then walk to the North Beach for Italian dinner around Washington Park

A buddy who lives there took us up to Coit Tower last year. Phenomenal views of the city and you can walk down the steps through the Telegraph Hill neighborhood chisled in the side of the hill. Really cool part of town.

I lucked out a rented a condo on the Filbert Steps/Telegraph Hill last year...these are some of the views from up there. The garden is really truly amazing.

I find the most enjoyment in just walking around the city through all the different neighborhoods. The Mission, Chinatown, North Beach, the Castro, downtown, Haight Ashbury, Japantown,. So many cool neighborhoods, parks, street art, food, and more to see.

Alcatraz audio tour was awesome. Both my wife and I liked it a lot.

Muir wood was cool.

I've shared this pic I took with my phone before, but to me it sums up why people move to California. Standing on the beach there and looking at the Golden Gate to your left and Alcatraz to your right is pretty cool.

Was there this summer to visit my sister and was generally unimpressed. Sausalito is a pretty nice place though.

Alcatraz is amazing, make sure to get tickets early, don't expect to just walk up and get tickets. The night tour is probably already sold out, but having done both, the day tour is still awesome and more of the island is open. Walking around the city is the way to go. Good luck getting warrior playoff tickets, unless your a ot billionaire. Book dinner at house of prime rib on van ness, make sure to get reservations. Take ferry to Sausalito and take bus to Muir Woods, probably best thing to do. Golden gate park is also pretty cool.

Definitely going to do Alcatraz. My wife only has one afternoon/evening in SF. Should I take her on to tour or do that myself and do the other touristy things with her?

Make sure you buy tickets in advance. Since you aren't there in the summer high season, the tours may not fill up. When we were out there last summer all the tour times were full. So better safe than sorry. LINK

We were out there for 3 weeks. 1 week in the city and 2 weeks in Sausalito house sitting for friends. Honestly, Sausalito sucks. Its full of tourists and little shitty shops that cater to them. There are a few good restaurants including Sushi Ran. And there are some good views of the bay and city. This was my view for 2 weeks.

I'll 2nd House of Prime Rib - My co-worker choked on his dinner and had to have the heimlich. A manager ran in as everyone stared in silence and enthusiastically said "It's ok everybody he just loved his prime rib THAT much, enjoy the rest of your meals!"

Other places I liked:
Tadich Grill
Magnolia Gastro Pub for breakfast/brunch
Yank Sing
Lers Ros Thai
Tony's Pizza (went here hammered after the lsu/wisc game - it's right next to the lsu alumni bar Northstar Cafe)

Ferry Building - ferry to Sausalito for lunch
Spend very little time at Fisherman's Wharf, it's all tourists
