Is it worth the drive? Staying at Hyatt. Just worried about how bad the motion sickness might be. I have a 10yr old that is susceptible. Will be going mid March.

I personally think you drive just short of Hana and turn around… turn a 8 hour day into a 4 hour drive and don’t miss a lot.

It does become a lot of the same… even though it is amazing and gorgeous. Once you have passed wailua I am pretty mush done.

Would spend more time exploring the west side and northwest side of the island personally

I agree go about half way and turn around. We made it to Hana and made the decision to go back because we feared driving that road at dusk and into the night. It was a beautiful drive but does become repetitive it seems after a while. OP make sure if you are going to make the full trip you leave super early like 7 am early.

That drive is beautiful but to someone susceptible to motion sickness it can get ugly quick.

There's an app (Shaka Guide) that you can download that's a virtual tour guide which is really good. It tells you about all the different places to stop along the way. We jumped off a cliff, swam in several swimming holes, went into a cave, visited the black beach. I wish we could've hiked to the 7 pools at the end but the water levels were too high.

If you're just going to drive to Hana and back w/o doing any stops....I wouldn't do that.

Leave very early.

yes, you can get motion sickness. Take non-drowsy dramamine

Shaka Guide is very helpful for sure. I agree with others that you don't *need* to go all the way to Hana.

Just be ready for a very long day. One of those things I can say I did but never want to do again

I did it when I was ~20 and do not recommend it. I was warned by my folks to not go who also didn’t enjoy it years earlier. The friends I went with now joke and we all call it the road to Hell

I felt like there are plenty of great views closer to not have to be in the car for 8 hours to drive to a place where they essentially have like 2 restaurants that serve ham sandwiches

Also, my idea of an activity on a vacation is not being trapped in a car all day. More of a beach and beer or hike outside/activities personality so that obviously plays into my dislike of it

Anyways, looks like I’m in the minority and Hawaii is beautiful so the trip will be amazing

I’ll disagree with everyone. I really enjoyed it once I figured out what was going on.

My suggestion is start early, don’t stop at the early spots or spots that have buses/tours, and only stop places you can swim.

I enjoyed it as well.

As long as you know its a long day on a winding road.

My advice is to do it, plan some things out using the Shaka app. if you start to get tired, just head back. No big deal.

Thanks for the info. My thought was to leave early and drive straight to black sand beach, stopping when necessary for break. That way it maybe won’t be as crowded. Then make our way back from there stopping as we go.

Continue the loop around the island and you can get back quicker than being stuck behind a bunch of haoles that can't drive.

This. Wai'anapanapa Park was the highlight for me. We have two toddlers so didn't get to do any of the hiking to natural pools and waterfalls.

Best thing about Hana the town was Brudda Hut. The ribs are quite good.

We did a helicopter ride over it. Was a lot of fun and didn't have to do the long drive.

Nope. There's almost no views at all - frustratingly so, as the ocean is just 100 yards away at most for most of the drive. It's just that there are trees there you can't see through!

It's the only time I ever got queasy when I was the one behind the wheel.

And the 7 sacred pools can be dreadfully crowded.

I say skip it.

I did it with the family two years ago and enjoyed it. We also stayed a night at the Hyatt in Hana, so we could take our time. My wife and one of my kids get motion sickness and we were able to take it slow enough where they made it through.

If you're driving the Road to Hana for ocean views, then don't do it. It's more about the absurdity of driving through a rainforest and gulches--with waterfalls right off the road--while having some interesting stops along the way. It's a once in a lifetime experience for most people.

The best stops are near the end or after Hana--Black Sand Beach, Red Sand Beach, and Sacred Pools/PiPiWai trail. That's why we stayed in Hana. We went to those right as they opened, before the crowds could make it and it worked out perfectly.

Honestly it was a bit underwhelming but it crossed off on my bucket list.
