We are wanting to go on a trip to Colorado right after Christmas next year. Not necessarily ski resort town, and have done Estes Park several times. Been all over Colorado in summer and fall, just looking for recommendations for that time of year

Ski Towns are usually all dressed up for Christmas. I’d consider Breckenridge, Aspen, or Vail.

Crested Butte or Telluride.

We booked Breckenridge for next Christmas. First time skiing for me.

Ouray isn’t a ski town, but it’s beautiful. Research that one.

I would highly recommend Aspen. Great food and gorgeous during the winter/Christmas.

I'll second the Aspen and Ouray recommendations.
Aspen is wonderful in September. It is "off season" there. No winter skiing crowds and no summer hiking crowds, but the weather is still mild enough to hike as much as you want. Also, the Aspens are changing colors, which is amazing.
I did Ouray/Silverton as a kid with my family. Great trip. Took the train to Durango towards the end.

Ditto. I think they call it the Switzerland of North America or something like that due to the scenery. It’s an old mining town. So it has a charming, frozen in time feel to it. Some scenes from the original True Grit were filmed there and a short drive north of there.
It is also a short drive to Telluride if you want to ski. There’s an abundance of hiking trails walking distance from any location in the city.
Getting a mountain side AirBnb might be better than any hotel you can book, though there is an old hotel there that used to operate as a brothel, that now has a nice old school dive bar.
