I know better than to book this itinerary but I'm still going to ask . Have a work trip to Auburn coming up and will need to find the closest airport, looks to be ATL or BHM. I don't mind connecting since honestly I'm used to it after living in BR for so long, any advantage to going to BHM over ATL? I'd save about $300 connecting vs the nonstops so entertaining the idea.

For the Delta people, you think 26 minutes in Boston is enough time for a connection from a CR9 to an A321? On the way back I've got an option to connect in NYC Laguardia with 37 minutes from an A321 to CR9. Itinerary is below

Flights down

11:31a BUF 01:09p BOS
1h 38m
Delta 5540
Canadair Regional Jet 900
Operated by ENDEAVOR AIR DBA DELTA CONNECTION

Layover in Boston, MA 26m
Boston Logan Intl Airport

01:35p BOS 04:43p ATL
3h 08m
Delta 2378
Airbus Industrie A321

Flights back

12:30p ATL 02:33p LGA
2h 03m
Delta 2917
Airbus Industrie A321

Layover in New York, NY 37m
New York LaGuardia Airport

03:10p LGA 04:48p BUF
1h 38m
Delta 5256
Canadair Regional Jet 900
Operated by ENDEAVOR AIR DBA DELTA CONNECTION

Logan is a really easy airport to navigate. Not nearly as large as LGA. But 26 minutes is cutting it close for any airport. Chances are you would be fine, but even a slight delay could completely screw you over.

I haven't been in the delta terminal at Boston yet so I didn't know if the gates are really spread apart or close to one another. Sounds like they're pretty close and I'd have a good shot. Plus, if I book this and that flight is delayed or cancelled, I just hop on the nonstop for free and save several hundred $$.

I'd do both since there will be multiple options to rebook in the event of a delay.

That's my thought as well, thanks for confirming.

Since you're one of the resident delta experts here (I'm only a FO), do you find an advantage of going in/out of BHM over ATL or vice versa? Aka rental car pickup is easier at BHM versus the shuttle at ATL, traffic is usually much worse on 85 around ATL rush hour or Birmingham traffic isn't usually bad, etc.

Good chance that LGA flight will be delayed.

If you have to change from C>D it might be close but I think you would make it. Another issue could be if they don’t have a gate for your plane and you need to take a shuttle.

I’d stay with ATL. I’d do MGM or CGS before BHM.

Also, I’m a FO right now too. Rolled over 24,790 MQMs to keep Gold for 20-21 months vs. 13.

I had to google what FO meant on Delta. Was very lost.

Same here. I was thinking if you guys are both First Officers you should know this, and why are buying a ticket?

I can't really answer anything about BHM, although I would imagine their rental car pickup would be much easier and quicker than ATL, but ATL is AU is a super easy trip. At the airport you're already right there on 85 and it's a straight shot all the way into town. I live in north ATL and can make it from here to AU in right at 2 hours. From BHM it looks like the most direct route is hwy 280 which from my previous experience could potentially be a cluster, or at any rate have lower speeds. Also strictly looking at the numbers ATL is fewer miles anyway to au.

BHM is much easier to navigate than ATL, particularly renting cars. However, I’d go to Atl. Will be an easier drive to Auburn more than likely. You will avoid downtown Atl traffic and avoid 280 in Bham. 85 can’t be slow but should clear up quickly.

I wouldn't trust either of those. DL runs hourly from ATL-LGA. Can you not take an hour earlier?

Not as bad as going north, but you are going to hit ATL traffic at 4:43 arrival going south.

I’d say it’s a wash from Auburn, Bham is further but much smaller and easier airport.

You are saying that if you connect through Atl to Birmingham it saves you $300? That doesn’t make any sense.

If price was the same or close, I’d go through atl as your flight options if there are any issues will be greater and should be fewer connections?

Thank you two for the advice on the drive, never done it before and will be making this trip twice over the next month and a half. I had no idea how 280 was, will stick with 85 and ATL for these trips.

I didn't end up booking those connections, 37 min doesnt leave room for air traffic control delays. Instead I booked a 6:30pm ATL-LGA with an hour layover to LGA-BUF, still think that'll be iffy but oh well. Not waiting until 9:50pm for the nonstop and 4:30pm is too early with meetings ending around 1pm auburn time.

Wording was confusing in the OP, apologize. I was meaning to say that the connecting flights above were $300 cheaper than taking the nonstop BUF-ATL flights ($580!!!). Since work's paying and I need the MQD, i ended up booking the nonstops for one trip and nonstop/1 connection (LGA) on the way back

BOS worries me because if you are on the opposite (Endeavor to mainline) it could be a trek.
