Wife and I going on July 3rd through the weekend. Any suggestions minus Bar Harbor? Just don’t want to drive 3 hours each way. Thanks.

It's about 20 minutes drive to the LL Bean store.

Portland is great for wandering/Yelping around.

Hopefully you like beer and good food because there’s a lot of it.

Breweries:

Allagash
Austin Street
Bissell Brothers
Foundation
Maine Beer Co.
Rising Tide
Goodfire
Lone Pine
Oxbow
Maine Mead Works

Food:

Honeypaw
Duckfat
Eventide
Fore Street
East Ender
Central Provisions
Thirsty Pig
Holy Donut
Standard Baking Co.

Look into doing a whale watching tour too.

As some have mentioned, LL Bean is nearby, if that’s your thing.

Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth is a really nice spot.

Go to Freeport, ME

Has the giant LL Bean boot but more importantly has Harraseekit Lunch and Lobster Company.

I can only tell you what the prices were in 2006 but you could get a 2 lb lobster, half a dozen steamed mussels, and corn on the cob for less than $20. And it was BYOB. We literally came with ice chests.

They get their lobsters right from the boats of the guys coming in from the bay.

Looks like the Portland Sea Dogs (AA Red Sox) are only in town on the 3rd, but are playing the Yankees AA team. There are fireworks after the game.

Take the ferry to Peaks Island, rent some bikes or a golf cart.

Take a drive to Kennebunkport for a day. Well worth it.

Hit up local breweries.

The wife and I went last summer. It’s a nice town to just walk around and check out all the lov spots. We also went on a sunset sailboat cruise around the harbor which was cool. Like Abita said, Cape Elizabeth is a nice spot too.

I loved Boothbay Harbor. I did not care for Bar Harbor

Portland is amazing. Central Provisions blew me away. Mashtun is a great bar. Also go to allagash and all the breweries right by it. Duckfat and Eventide are solid too

That's wise unless you were planning on staying several days in BH. We went there last year and drove from Portland but we stayed 4 nights there. Definitely not worth it for one or two days.

Portland is not that big and you may want to get out of the city after a few days.
A while back a TB poster suggested the Boothbay Harbor area as a good place to go. It is about an hour drive from Portland. You go through Bath and Wiscasset on the way. Red Eats is in Wiscasset, right next to Hwy 1, and they are supposed to have the best crab rolls. Don't know if they do but there was a crowd of 50+- people in line when we drove by. We will visit Boothbay if we ever get back to Maine.

Google Bath for things to do there.

We stopped by L.L. Bean. They had a lot of high price but quality home decorations and some sporting supplies; guns, etc. but Bass Pro Shop has a lot more. I don't need to go back there.

The light house south of town is definitely worth the visit but expect it to be crowded.

We drove through Kennebunkport but did not have time to stop. It was too crowded to be impressive; maybe if we would have had time to walk around. Driving by the Bush home was worth it; I guess because there have been so many news reports from there over the years.

We ate lunch at the Maine Dinner in Wells because it was a DDD place. It was good dinner food; they have excellent blueberry pancakes. I got the Irish Eggs Benedict; has corned beef hash rather than C. bacon, and it was very good. Wells is not too far from K'port.

We were only in Portland one night. We ate supper at DiMillo's on the Water and it was good but I have not seen it recommended on this board by the locals and more frequent visitors. A friend had recommended it. I like the Allagash beer I had a lot, think it was Allagash White. Would have toured the brewery if we had time.

We would have done more water tour type activities but one of our traveling companions got sea sick easily so we didn't. We did a tour in BH and enjoyed it. I would look into that.

If you search this board for Portland Maine you should find a number of post from the past year or so with good information/opinions.

My wife and I spent a long weekend there earlier this month. I’m in the process of writing a trip review. Will have it posted soon. It’s an awesome place, man. Y’all will have a damn good time.

I had a thread on this same subject not too long ago and got a lot of good feedback.

Portland Head Lighthouse is a must. Take a drive down to Land's End/ Baileys Island/Harpswell, unbelievable scenery, see the world's only granite crib-stone bridge.

I strongly second Eventide. Great spot.

Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth.
Red’s Eats in Wiscasset if you head North.

I second Portland Head lighthouse. Went there last September. They have the original Cousin’s Lobster truck there with a lobster grilled cheese to die for.

Allagash tour was quite great as well, and all of the breweries in that park within walking distance put out great stuff.

I would drive to Rockport/Camden area. You can make it in an hour and 15 minutes. It’s the 30A of Maine. Stop and see the Rockland Light House and breaker wall on the way
