Don’t go. Went this summer. Absolute shite show with the walking homeless zombies, the car break ins, lack of parking, 1/4 of all businesses shut down, the fights, etc. Stayed at the Hyatt Union Square. They warned us to stay inside after 7pm.

Business that are open are limited because of crime.. Chinatown closes at 5pm, most close at 7pm and nothing is open after 9pm.

Used to love to visit San Fransisco. It’s unrecognizable in my opinion.

Well, considering I’m on the flight, that ship has sailed. It’s just a one night layover before heading to bandon dunes in the morning.

going the opposite of the previous caller --- enjoy it and just walk, walk and more walking ... you are in a good spot - North Beach, Telegraph Hill, Fort Mason, The Wharf is fine if you are first time visitor, the Ferry Building ... you can cover a lot of ground.

Plenty of sights and food .... Mr. Jiu's is a good, modern restaurant in Chinatown if you can get a seat at the bar. Or any of the famous Chinese crab restaurants could be fun to pop into.

“One Night in San Francisco” sounds like a gay porno. Or a Grateful Dead album.

I have a similar question. But I’ll only be in SF for about 5 hours. Looking for something to do. What’s one thing that would be unique in SF?

Walk through Chinatown then over to Coit Tower…dinner at Boulevard maybe. There are some REALLY neat old hotel bars downtown (maybe there’s a guide you can find online). Maybe the Ferry building for cheese (Cowgirl Creamery) and wine next door?

Tadich Grill for dinner, Roxanna cafe for breakfast ("corned beef sunrise" is the only way to go).

I'm pretty hardcore about that routine when in town.

I traveled to SF every couple weeks pre-COVID, but haven’t been since February 2020 — unsure what’s open, isn’t, etc. Heading back in mid-September, so that’ll be good.

Anyway, my two favorite traditional Chinese restaurants near your hotel is Begoni Bistro and City View. For something a bit more modern and market-driven, check out China Live. If you want to skip Chinese, Coqueta is a good option — it’s right on the water. You can grab some oysters at Hog Island before, too. For cocktails within walking distance of your hotel, Devils Acre and 15 Romolo are good options.

Since you’re only in SF for the night, I’m not sure how much you’re willing to explore outside of Chinatown / Embarcadero, but if you’re looking for craft beer, Cellarmaker and City Beer Store are within 5 minutes walking of one another in SoMA. Sort of a weird area — I’ve never felt unsafe, but you just need to expect some addicts / weirdos. They usually leave me alone.

Not sure if Mission is getting too far, but another eclectic neighborhood. So, so many good taquerias. My favorites are Tacos El Paton and La Corneta. If you’d prefer something with a view, El Techo is modern Mexican with a great rooftop. Incredible views of downtown.

Always like visiting Lower Haight, too. Of course, Toronado is the craft beer destination, but Iza Ramen is very good and Palmyra is a great, quick stop for Mediterranean.

There are a few other neighborhoods I like (i.e. Richmond, Sunset, Bernal, Noe Valley), but I’m assuming you won’t make it there with just an afternoon and night.

We had an unexpected layover once. We got a rental car and went to Muir Woods; ate in Sausalito.

If you're in Chinatown, stop by the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory.

Any suggestions outside of bars/restaurants? We would have had enough of that by the time we get to SF

- Grab a coffee and lounge at Mission Dolores Park.

- Walk Bernal Heights Park. Incredible views of SF in every direction.

- Buena Vista is another park that offers good views. Also, it’s near the Painted Ladies if you’re looking for a photo opp.

- Check out Sea Lions at Pier 39

- Walk through Nob Hill. Very cool part of SF — a lot of history and interesting architecture.

Perfect. We have about 5-6 hours to kill after we leave Napa and before we fly out of Oakland. Those options are exactly what we were looking for. Thanks.

I've stayed at that le Meridien several times many years ago. It was a decent hotel at the time. Don't know about now. There are are (or were) plenty of good Italian and Chinese places to eat within walking distance of the hotel. Don't know what the walk around that area is like now though. It's been a decade since I've stayed there.

Go shoplifting. If you keep it below $950 per store they literally won't do anything to you.

In Chinatown that porno would be titled “Bangkok”.

Uber is your friend. Been a lot of walk here or walk there. San Francisco will wear you arse out going up and down those hills like Telegraph Hill. However, of you are only going to be there for a few hours take the trolley from the Wharf to Fairmont Hotel and have a drink in the hotel lobby. Then eat in China town and Go to Coit Tower area for sunset or photo ops.

Or ride across the GG Bridge to Sausalito to eat.

Mission Street heading west out of downtown is a good choice. Someone mentioned Muir Woods and Sausalito. Those are both great choices.
