We will be driving from Asheville NC home to Granbury TX next week and plan to stop over in Memphis for a day staying at the Peabody Hotel.

We would appreciate suggestions for that day. We are an older couple so we don't want to walk too much, but will take Uber wherever we need to go.

TIA

I guess you could walk in Memphis, maybe about 10 feet off of Beale.

Once you leave Nashville the state of Tennessee devolves culturally with each passing mile. However if you are staying at the Peabody you could go to Beale Street, Riverfront etc and eat/shop. Below is their minor league baseball schedule..

Memphis "Chicks" aka Redbirds Schedule

Sun Studio is a pretty cool place to visit if you're music fan, and I don't remember it being too far from the Peabody. Or maybe we took the bus from Beale St. I can't remember. The tour is only an hour. Lots of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. stuff in there.

It's certainly better than Graceland, but I still did enjoy the cheesiness of Graceland. It's not very close to The Peabody though, and is in a sketchy part of town.

Rendezvous is the tourist trap people may direct you to for BBQ. I guess it's a cool place, but the food was just okay. Central BBQ was much better, but I forget if it was in that area. Seems like it was pretty close, but it's been a few years.

It's been a while (thankfully) but Interstate Bar-b-q used to be real "Memphis style"* bar-b-que and not too far off the beaten path.

Commissary in Germantown was my favorite BBQ, not traditional Memphis though.

Nashville abandoned any culture it had and replaced it with tourist garbage. It just a bland city now, full of hipsters.

The National Civil Rights Museum @ the Lorraine Motel is interesting, and considering national events, very much worth a visit these days.

The Sun Studios or Stax tours are great if you're into music.

A very small museum with limited collections/galleries is the Metal Museum. It's up on a bluff, with nice small grounds overlooking a bend in the MS river. Probably only interesting if you're into metalcraft, but I enjoyed it & esp enjoyed the lovely view. Has a working forge & blacksmiths, etc demonstrating during certain hours. Not much around it, so it's a drive in/drive away sort of place. Link: LINK

Wiseacre Brewing has really good beer. Overton Square area is an okay place to hang out and get a bite. Granted, it’s been about five years since I’ve been there.

I hear there are a few breweries in Memphis that are open to tours (Ghost River, Crosstown, High Cotton, Memphis Made, Wiseacre and Meddlesome Brewing). I always enjoy seeing behind the scenes and sampling beer. You can take the Memphis Brew Bus if you want to see more than one or two and let someone else drive you around. It's on my list the next time I'm in Memphis.

Overton Park is nice for a picnic. Grab sandwiches from Kwik Check close by the park, Bogie's Deli, Chinese Sub Shop or Trolley Stop Market. Better yetm, grab some Gus's chicken. They have music often at the bandstand/shell there. The free concerts for the fall start next week. If you're there on Sunday, you can worship w/ the Rev Al Green at Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Whitehaven. The National Civil Rights Museum should be a requirement for everyone. You'll learn more there in 3 hours than a lifetime of public education.

If you're into dive bars, Earnestine and Hazel’s is my favorite from years gone by and makes a great burger. They make say it's haunted if you're into that as well. Four Way Restaurant has some of the best food on the planet. It's the only place I've ever seem w/ Country Salmon Croquet, Neck Bones and Liver & Onions on the daily menu (plus all the other soul food standards). The Gay Hawk Restaurant is probably right behind them.

The Peabody, Rendezvous, Earnestine and Hazel’s, Civil Rights Museum are all withing spitting distance of one another. The Gay Hawk is about 5 mins away and Four Way is about 10 mins.

Brooks Museum is supposed to be good. If you don't want to stray from the Peabody to visit Stax, they have the Rock and Soul Museum down off Beale Street right next to the arena.

Oh yeah, there is BBQ. Avoid Corky's. Anywhere else is good, even the tourist traps.

Gus’s for lunch.

Sun Studios or Gibson Factory or the Lorraine.

Watch the ducks.

Beale Street for a bit.

I would do Rendezvous for the experience but you could also get a really good meal at somewhere like Andrew Daniel.

Then Raifords late night.

What’s wrong with that day? Not much in my opinion.

Sun Studio is cool, but don't walk. I did that a few years ago. It's not terribly long, but it sure as shite is through some sketchy places.

Rendezvous is a place you just have to go to. Some love it and some don't but you have to find out for yourself. You gotta eat downstairs though to get the full effect. It's just not the same upstairs in the party hall.

Check out the ducks at the Peabody, and I'm sure there are better places in Memphis for BBQ other than the Rendezvous but it is a cool place to check out and the food has always been good when I have been. It is one of my favorite places when I go to Memphis.

Sun Studio is great if it's your genre of music, and even though Beale street isn't Bourbon it is still fun.

Beale Street. BB King’s for ribs. Take the duck tour. Very informative. Do Graceland. Headset version.
