1. Rio - The most naturally beautiful city I've been. RJ simply has incredible landscapes.
2. Singapore - The density and thoughtful use of land (SG is loaded with wetlands and natural areas) is very impressive. Great recreational opportunities outside the immediate downtown core.
3. Villefranche-sur-Mer - Bit more of a niche mention but it's almost over a hill from Nice so I'll mention it
An incredible setting in a small-ish harbor/peninsula that pours into the Mediterranean. Such cool elevation to the town and incredible water color.
One city I'm a bit let down by is Kuala Lumpur. I've been more than a couple times with one side of my wife's family from Malaysia. This is relative because I really like KL and some of its disadvantages are in part of rapid population growth. However, there's a decent amount of trash in the immediate downtown core and it's a little difficult to navigate with limited intersections. Some of the neighborhoods / townships outside of the core are nice (I've stayed multiple times in Taman Desa), but I don't totally need to go back. I know I will a few more times

Prague - simply gorgeous. My all time favorite European city. Architecture is amazing. The people are warm and inviting.
Rio de Janeiro - not without its issues in terms of crime and safety; but, Ipanema, Copacabana, Leblon, Christ the Redeemer are all pretty awesome. It’s a little slice of paradise with a city thrown on it.
Tokyo - the sheer scale of it is still mindblowing to me. Very clean with a cool mix of modern buildings and ancient shrines and castles. It’s a different sort of beauty compared to places in Europe.
Let down…
Beijing - don’t get me wrong; I had a blast; but, it doesn’t take long to get away from the modern buildings and into some pretty dirty slums. The air quality issues and pollution are very apparent. Glad to have visited; won’t ever go back.

Favorites:
1) Kyoto - Fantastic culture, food, nature
2) Budapest - Beautiful architecture, great nightlife
3) Florence - Everything.
Let Downs:
1) Vancouver - While the West End and Park were absolutely gorgeous, the city felt dead and overrun with drugs/homeless while we were there.
2) Milan - Just not for me. Prefer so many other European cities

Most beautiful:
1. Seville, Spain - my home for the past 5 years. Unbelievable mix of Spanish and Moorish cultures and architecture.
2. Tie between Lisbon and Porto - beautiful oceanside cities with hill terrains and magnificent architecture
3. Not a large city, but Aix en Provence, France. Feels like you stepped into a fairytale.
Most disappointed
Marseille - my friends in France warned me, but it was on our way to Aix. Its nice close to the water, but just a little bit away from that area and the dirt and stench consumes everything.

Agree ugliest and most annoying is LA.
I've come to enjoy Istanbul the most.

I go to LA all the time for my work and have come to love SoCal. I get not liking the city of LA, but I never go downtown and skid row, etc. Yeah, the politics suck but saying that area is ugly is simply laughable.
Some of the best hiking in the country. The Topanga Canyon drive was breathtaking looking down on Malibu. That area has 15 million people and stretches 70 miles. Hard to judge it based on one thing. I always look forward to going back. Also, 70 and sunny everyday doesnt suck.
I'm not saying im moving there but you can do MUCH worse than that area.

I take a lot of cruises, so I’ll do the Caribbean edition:
Charlotte Amelie, St. Thomas
There’s just something magical about this island. Its proximity to St. John and its soft sand beaches make it my favorite stop in the Caribbean. I feel like I’m in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Willemstad, Curacao
The water is the most amazing blue I’ve ever seen. The colorful Dutch architecture combined with walkable shopping and dining are hard to beat. This port has to be on any Southern Caribbean itinerary I take.
Roatan
For such a small island, the topography and variety of locale is surprising. I’ve never had a bad day here; locals are friendly and willing to help me piece together the perfect day. Everything is close to port and there’s a ton of things to do.
Disappointing:
Bassaterre, St. Kitt’s
What a shite show. It was like Jamaica lite. Tons of hustle going on. Hard to find a taxi. There were 3 other ships in port which didn’t help, but I’ve been on similar sized islands that could handle that kind of traffic better. We were so frustrated by the difficulty of getting where we want to go, our day was just disappointing.

Los Angeles is definitely on the let down list.
+1
You see these beautiful homes and beautiful babes and sunny weather on TV but what they don’t show you is how fricking disgusting Hollywood is and the sheer amount of homeless people walking around
…and the endless smell of marijuana permeating your nose when you’re outside on a patio trying to have a nice meal

After those, there are a lot of honorable mentions like Montreal, Charleston, SLC, Reykjavík, Colorado Springs, Miami, Rome, Paris, etc.

Probably London. I liked London, but we had high expectations for it. The countryside is nice looking though. Maybe Nashville too.

This seems a bit crazy, but I'll kindly ask - What about Chicago is ugly? Has some of the most diverse buildings in the world, incredibly clean and almost no homeless encampments, easy to navigate, the neighborhoods are themselves unique cultural enclaves, incredible setting along Lake Michigan and Chicago River, and it has the second-best transit system in the US.
Surely, there has to be worse out there

You still watch Baywatch ? Hollywood itself outside of Musso And Frank and the old theaters is kind of shitty sure. And skid row is what it is. The rest of the city is solid, from Manhattan beach to Pasadena to Studio City/Burbank. Sure it has its fair share of strip malls ---- but think Houston with better weather, art, sports teams, museums, food, music, looking people, beaches, mountains, universities and outdoor spaces. Even downtown LA with it's problems beats Houston's downtown with similar issues on a smaller scale.

Honestly, DTLA has seen a really, really positive transformation. Like you said, still some issues but there has been such a concerted effort to make it more of a destination for residents and visitors alike - Arts District is loaded with great restaurants, South Park is a massive entertainment area, and the entire downtown area is undergoing significant zoning reform that will allow a reduction of parking and boost mixed-use buildings and residential development.

There's nothing more beautiful than lines of traffic that stretch for hours without moving.
