I feel like getting away for MG this year but I can only do from Sun-Thu. Thinking something under 5k for a family of 4 (6 & 8 yr old) and I have enough miles to where airfare is a non-factor.

I just can't choose a destination. We have upcoming trips to blue ridge, Disney world, Cabo and Europe so I would rule those out.

I would like to see D.C. but I don't think my youngest would care for it at this time. Thought about a quick ski trip but the wife doesn't really care for it. Any suggestions?

Everyone from Louisiana will be in Colorado or Orlando that week.

Yep.

My daughter will be at a cheer thing in Disney that week. Half of the New Orleans Catholic school folks will be there.

I've done my Disney trips, my son and I will go camping or something that week.

Lake Tahoe would be nice through Reno, stay at the Hyatt. Rent a vehicle and go check out the area. Take a day and drive down to Tuolumne. Hike up to Eagle Lake in the back of Emerald Lake. Rent a boat from the Hyatt one day. The lake is stunning for us brown water folk.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Tahoe. I don’t even remember the hotel but I remember skiing at Heavenly.

I may look into that if I can find enough to entertain the wife and kids. Not a gambler so the Casinos are a non factor.

Yea, I hate casinos as well. It would be a combination of day trips, and maybe a pool day. Truckee is cool, a day going south to Tuolumne, a west shore day down to Emerald Bay (hike), off-road trails if you can rent something capable...there are some easy ones just off the lake...and boat tours. Paddle boarding in that part of the lake is great, King’s Beach has neat little restaurants.

You’re right though, you have to manufacture your good time. Think about San Francisco? A rental car there gets you everywhere.

ETA: paddle boarding isn’t the right time, snow mobile trail riding is awesome though.

We did San Francisco this past Mardi Gras. Did a couple of days exploring SF, then rented a car and took day trips to Monterey/Pebble Beach and Napa/Sonoma. Had a great time. We didn't bring the kids, but they would have had a good time.

Not sure who your miles are with, but SW has direct flights MSY to OAK.

I wouldn't do Tahoe in February. If you want to ski then go to Colorado, Utah, Jackson Hole, etc...

Tahoe will be between 20-40 degrees in February so it makes day trips in the mountains a lot more difficult. It also makes, paddleboarding, hiking, and the pool kind of miserable.

I'd probably do the Monterey/SF trip, Big Sur is always an incredible day trip, the Monterey aquarium would be really good for the kids, plenty of good restaurant and dining options and theirs plenty to do in SF obviously

DC would be cold and kids that young won't appreciate it as much

Yes, DC will be cold, and there will be a chance of snow. But that can be fun for kids who don't regularly see snow...even if it's just leftover snow in nooks and crannies. Cold weather means you can spend lots of time in the museums and not feel like you "should" be outside. All of the museums have coat/bag checks, so you won't be stuck hauling your coat around while you play tourist.

Also disagree that the kids are too young for DC. Museum of Natural History is full of dinosaurs, gemstones, animals, and IMAX. Watch Night at the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian, and even the 6 year old will be excited to see the museums & artifacts featured in the movie. Air & Space is great for kids, with lots of kid-focused activities...and you can actually TOUCH a piece of the MOON.

And if the weather is cold & sunny, kids will love walking the Mall. The actual buildings on money--an easy way to engage young children who may not be interested in government or history.

ETA: I've been to DC/Baltimore several times for MG, and a bonus is the relative absence of tourists. The mall area museums are SO much less crowded in the depths of winter than in summer.

Plus, DC offers pro hockey and pro basketball, if the kids like sports. Or perhaps a G'town basketball game.

I'm in a similar boat but my kids are 2 and 4. I'm thinking we end up in the Bahamas--cold weather is just not in the cards at their ages.

so that's my suggestion: VRBO a place in the Bahamas and chill

Same here with a 1.5 year old. I am thinking Harbor Island, Exuma, or St. John.

Would be the first time going to the Virgin Islands not on a catamaran.

I'd go to Mexico City. Mexico City is bigger than NYC, and there's tons to do. The kids will enjoy Xochimilco and Teotihuacan for sure. Everything is inexpensive. I really love MEX and can't wait to go back, and the city is just right for a trip of four or five days. Weather should be cool -- average high of 75 and low of 45.

And the violent crime rate in the city is lower than in New Orleans or Baton Rouge, so don't let people scare you. Like any big city, it has neighborhoods you should avoid, and even more that you should avoid at night, but it's a very safe city overall.

I’m liking the DC and west coast option. Might look into Grand Canyon also.

I want to do Mexico City but maybe when the kids are a little older.

We went to DC over thanksgiving with kids 9,7 and 5 and it was a blast. Plenty to do in cold weather with young kids

I’d pick a National Park.

I had fun as a kid in Carlsbad, but I’ve heard it went south last few years.

SMNP is an option. I know Gatlinburg gets a bunch of hate on this board, but kids love it. And it will be empty during MG.

Ozarks are fun and cheap.

You can always take a train somewhere. I guarantee the kids will remember a train ride to St. Louis and visit the Arch/six flags.
