I'm going to Spain mid April - mid May. First week in Lisbon, then Seville (2.5 days) -> Granada (3.5 days) -> Madrid (6.5 days) -> Valencia (2.5 days) -> Barcelona (4.5 days). Anymore tips, let me have 'em!

Seville is awewsome with a great food scene. Stay near the river. You can daytrip to Gibraltor although I'd choose Ronda over Gilbraltor 10 of 10 times.

Why so long in Madrid? 3 days would be plenty.

3 of those days I'm going to have to post up and do some work while there so those afternoons/nights will be burned working US eastern-ish hours. But in the mornings/early afternoons during the first part of those 6.5 days I can get out and do things in the city pending I can be in front of my laptop by 1pm local time. The 3.5 days I am free to do whatever I was thinking about taking at least one day trip pending how much I have left to see in Madrid proper that I wasn't able to see before starting work.

bonus points if anyone knows any cool cafes to work from in Madrid.

I just checked out the website and honestly that is about as far you can get from what we enjoy. That sounds like a miserable waste of 2-3 hours for us. Different strokes for different folks I guess

Apologies, I do believe they have the traditional chain restaurants there as well along with a super sized Diet Coke

Haha, there is a lot in between Mcdonalds and tourist packed Michelin star restaurants. I was in Portugal last year and we got a tip to "look for restaurants where you see the people with paint on their clothes eating". Apparently, they are repainting a lot of shite in Lisbon. So, the sentiment was that is where the locals are eating. I can relate to the OP's statement because right now I more enjoy the atmosphere and authenticity of where locals eat than worrying about booking reservations at places like DiverXO. Nothing wrong with that if thats what you like, but your comment comes off as pretentious and on brand for what I would imagine the patronage and atmosphere is like at DiverXO.

I have nothing constructive to add, but I needed to you let you know you're not alone. I'll take random tapas over constructed dinners that cost too much any day of the week. You do you. I want to watch people walk to the beach and back, and read a book. I don't need anyone to impress with with foams, etc.

I like Madrid a lot and if you're going to be mixing working and playing there I think you'll find plenty to do. There are a lot of rooftop bars/tapa places in Madrid to explore.

Madrid gets a bad rap because all things considered it’s a modern city by Spanish standards. But you can have a great time and see some tremendous castles, art museums, and other cool stuff over a couple days.

But the thing is when you get out of Madrid you tend to believe “Esta es la verdadera Espana”

Been living in Seville for going on 3 years. Its a magical city. About a 90 min. train ride from Madrid. Just prepare yourself for different eating customs - dinner typically is eaten aroud 9-10 pm. Most restaurants don't open till 8:30 pm. Architectural beauty is everywhere. And the prices for most thigs aree way cheaper in Seville than the other major cities in Spain.

Bumping this thread to add a couple of questions.

Considering BnB's in both Barcelona & Madrid and I'm curious about areas within each city to look at. Does anyone have recommendations on areas to focus on in each city? Also, areas to avoid staying in.

I'm creating a 12 day trip for 4 that will start in Barcelona and end in Madrid, with 4 or 5 days in northern Spain - Rioja, perhaps Navarre, and San Sebastian. We will see the popular sights in the two major cities and focus on food & wine in the north.

Bumping this old thread to say we have booked our flights.

Deciding on going in/out of Madrid. I was considering and open jaw with Madrid/Barcelona, but I think we are going to concentrate on Southern Spain this trip and skip Barca all together.

We arrive in Madrid on April 11 and leave out on April 20.

Looking to flesh out some more now that we have hard dates. Will prob spend a night or 2 to start in Madrid, then work south. Seville, Granada, Cadiz, Cordoba. Looks like Toledo and/or Segovia can be done as a day trip on one of our days in Madrid.

One of the things we may have to skip would be the Abbey at Montserrat outside of Barcelona. But I just think that would be a little to much to pack into 9-10 days.

Man we almost did it again but we are doing Spain in 2026. following your thread for advice also. We are considering mixing a few days in on the French Riviera.

Edit- realized I’ve already commented similarly in this thread. Oops.

Went to Spain in early October. Just getting around to posting this.

12 nights total - 4 in Barcelona, 4 in Olite (Navarre) in the Parador, 4 in Madrid. Had a car in Olite. Took a train from Barcelona to Zaragoza where we got the car, then returned in there 4 days later and took a train to Madrid.

Barcelona - Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, walking in the Gothic Quarter, one day small group trip to Monteserrat with lunch at a winery - this was excellent.

Olite - visited Logrono (food & wine), San Sebastian (food, scenery, history), and some small towns in Navarre for food & wine - all were great and would do again.

Zaragoza - spent about half a day walking and visiting the Basilica of the Our Lady of the Pilar - incredible church with a great story.

Madrid - museums, churches, food, and one day on a bus to Segovia, Avila, and Toledo. All were very good. Plenty of history.

Would love to return and spend some time in southern Spain, and probably the north again. Toying around with the idea of walking part of the Camino at some point.

Overall - A+ - liked this as Italy.

Dude, we're going to be there at the same time. Haven't fully completed my itinerary, but doing Barcelona, Seville and Madrid. Looking into maybe doing day trips to Montserrat and Cordoba.

Bump for 2025-

We have booked flights in/out of Madrid for April 10 - 20

So far this is what I'm contemplating:

Madrid 2 nights
Seville 3 nights
Cordoba 1 night
Granada 2 nights
Madrid 1 night, early AM flight the next morning

I am wondering if I should scratch the night in Cordoba do a day trip there instead. Should I add that night to Seville/Granada, or will 3/2 nights be enough for those places?
Should I add a night to Madrid at the end in order to do anything I didn't do the first part of the trip- possibly Segova? We are for sure going to see Toledo as part of the Madrid portion

From what I have gleaned, we would like to spend most of our time in the Seville/Granada areas, even if we have a day or so to do absolutely nothing but soak in the city is what we are looking for
