Turks and Caicos is not a country.

Hong Kong/Macao is not a country.

Your count is impressive enough as it is without fake padding.

LOL! I did not remember that.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory.

There are 193 voting members of the United Nations. That is really the most commonly accepted way to count.

The problem, of course, is that Taiwan is almost universally recognized as a country but is not part of the UN. Kosovo is recognized as an independent country by 98 other countries but is not part of the UN. Many nations consider Palestine to be a country, and it has official "observer" status at the UN, as does The Vatican.

So, some people argue for a broader definition. If you want a much bigger list, there's a group called the Travelers Century Club that lists 329 countries and territories, but their list is really flawed in some ways, as territories such as Wake Island and Midway Island are only accessible to the US Navy and very rarely permitted scientific expeditions -- there's no way for 99.9% of the world to travel there.

In my opinion, if you really want a fair yardstick to compare with, stick to the 193 voting members of the UN.

Oceania:

New Zealand

As you can see, my profile is very lopsided, as I have extensively in Europe and Latin America, but I have never been to Africa or anywhere in East or South Asia.

So, that's 39 countries. I am not counting or listing three more countries where I changed planes but never left the airport. As I indicated in the post above this one, I also do not list or count The Vatican. I currently have flights booked to South Africa and Costa Rica, so my count will hit 41 by the end of the year.
