If there is a similar thread to this already then please point me in the right direction. My girlfriend and I want to take a trip to Louisiana in the next few weeks. Which place should we go to? We are mostly going to immerse ourselves in the culture (lol)
Maybe go out to bars and listen to some Cajun (?) music. Eat some good food. Check out the old buildings and museums and what not.
I am thinking we should go to Lafayette and it is a bit closer. We can always go to Nola later on. Am I missing out by going to Lafayette instead of Nola?
I have never been to either city, only Baton Rouge when I was a kid.

Lafayette. You will be missing out on the WWII museum, but I've never found New Orleans particularly interesting.

Nothing against Lafayette, but New Orleans is considered one of the top vacation destinations in the country and is famous throughout the world.

Lafayette is a decent place for what it is, I have a hard time appreciating it as the kind of town someone from out of state can just plop into and easily take in any sort of tourist type "scene" if you don't have a lot of familiarity with the area.

If only we had a travel board where he could ask such questions.

Nah, but I'm just saying. Only real places to stay are suburban type hotels. There's no real walkable street scene to speak of. You have to get in a car and navigate the 4-5 arterial streets there to get anywhere that might be seen as an "attraction" which are all pretty much singularly isolated.
It's just not the type of place that is exactly conducive to a couples sort of weekend getaway from somebody with no familiarity with the area, no matter what information they might glean on a message board. Hell, it's not even like you gave any suggestions outside of just generally telling him you thought it would be better than New Orleans.

NOLA, and not even close. Stay in the Quarter, go do tourist stuff and some bar hopping during the day, then be back in your room by 9/10 PM and you'll be just fine. Stick to roads near the river, don't go away from the river past Bourbon Street, and you're 99% safe.
People get in trouble in NOLA when they get drunk and get lost wandering down quiet streets at 3 AM.

If you want to experience Cajun culture go to Lafayette. New Orleans is not Cajun, despite what many outsiders think.

NOLA
Stay in the CBD and ride the streetcars to uptown and explore magazine area. Go to the zoo if that is your thing.
And head into the QTR. Horse drawn tours are a good experience. Get a good cocktail and ride around seeing the city.

Its NOLA and its not particularly close.
Lafayette is fun for a day or two. Its a nice little city. But it is small. There really isn't a huge amount to do. If you're going to spend like 3 nights and you have a car, Laffy might be fine but
NOLA would be the easy choice for a first timer

Yeah that is partly why I wanted to pick Lafayette. But now this thread has me thinking otherwise. I would definitely have more fun in Lafayette but maybe not my girlfriend.

do both. take hwy 90 back to new orleans and you can hit some of the small towns along the way alot of gems especially when it comes to food.

I will have a car and I probably will stay only 2-3 nights. Just a weekend trip to do something.

I live in Texas but yeah now I’m thinking maybe I can do both. A night in Lafayette and then go to New Orleans for the other 2. Or vice versa

Stop in Lafayette on Thursday and spend the afternoon .
Catch some boudin in Scott and then hit one of the local restaurants. Head out towards New Iberia in the morning and go to the Tabasco factory and Jungle gardens on Avery Island.
Then head out on highway 90 to NOLA. French Quarter, museums, plenty to do and all walkable.
Stay by the convention center and walk to the quarter.
Street Car to Audubon Park and the zoo if you want.
Live by Lafayette, but New Orleans has many more thing to do.

Lafayette has much less things to do really. Unless you go to Avery Island, which is cool. New Orleans has significantly more tourist things to offer

Other than food, what would be worthwhile in these small towns. They are beyond redemption. But I’m thinking of Evangeline Parish here, so may not be on his route.
OP, visit New Orleans and follow the advice. There’s more than the FQ, too. I don’t know what one would do in Lafayette.
