We’ve been looking for a place to vacation for the long Mardi Gras weekend and came across decent deals in st Thomas. Is 4 nights a long Enough stay? I’ve always heard you need more time in the USVI.

It's fine but for a better stay I'd jump on the ferry at Red Hook and head over to St. John.

Buck - After a 20 year hiatus we are headed back to USVI, staying on St. John this time. We have been all over the Caribbean, but never made it back to St. John... staying on Coral Bay... May can't get here fast enough.

It's plenty if you just want to lay around on the beach or pool the whole time. It's probably enough if you want to get out and hit the tourist spots on the island one day as well.

It doesn't leave you much time to explore the other islands though, and the other islands around there are much better than St Thomas.

Our first time there we stayed on St Thomas, ended up taking the ferry to St John two days out of the 5 day trip. Every time we have been back since we have stayed on St John.

St Thomas is fine, but, St John is on another level of natural beauty.

I always consider two days Of any international vacation lost time due to getting there and then coming back. Flight time, customs, immigration, etc. can chew up most of the day.

I have stayed on St.John several times for 7 days then switched to 10 days mainly because you will lose 2 days to travel.

Unless you live in Miami, it's going to take longer than you think to get to STT, and even longer to St John. If you're planning on your entire vacation being 4 nights, I think you'll feel rushed going to the USVI's (especially trying to get to St John in that limited amount of time). I'm not advising against it, just trying to level set here.

Four nights on St Thomas though is plenty of time to see the island, relax on different beaches, and even do a full day trip to St John via the ferry.

I love both islands, but my preference is to St John. It's also slightly more expensive of a trip overall, so if your budget is a concern, then St Thomas may fit better in that regard.

Well the way I’m looking now, you’re on st Thomas at 330, and leaving at 2pm so you have the first evening, 3 full days, and the last morning to be on vacation. It’s tough to do any longer and leave the little ones at home.

We try to do 10 days for trips like this. I prefer to have travel days and vacation days. Eight days on the island is perfect for me with a travel day before and after those 8 days.

The other thing to consider is ferry schedules if one chooses to stay on St. John. This adds an hour or two to the travel day between the ferry and the taxi ride. The last time we were there they had a new ferry to St. John from Crown Bay which is closer to the airport. However, this ferry only operates twice a day with 3:30 being the first ferry out to St. John. The ferry coming back to Crown Bay operates at 11 AM and 4:15 PM so it may make more sense coming back to ferry to Red Hook from Cruz Bay. That ferry departs hourly on the hour.

As others said, yes it is enough time. Everything about not being able to see the other islands and exploring St. John is true, but I would argue that same argument can be made for almost any vacation in any decent city. A Caribbean vacation needs to be relaxed, if you are staying at a resort like the Marriot then maybe a planned day laying around the grounds, snorkeling off the beach, and the other things to do there. Getting in a sailboat tour or chartering a boat to take to around to other islands is another way to spend a day, this allows you to island hop and spend some time on the water, and check out some smaller beaches. Finally, if you want to get to St John, you will not regret it, there are some great beaches and places things to see there too. Just take in the island time and relax, then plan on going back.

There’s a reason St Thomas has deals. It’s worthwhile to spend a bit more on St John. We took a 10 day anniversary trip with not a single night on St Thomas. Simply driving through St Thomas to get to St John was enough to reinforce our decision to not spend even a single night in St Thomas.

St Thomas seemed more like an armpit with touristy shopping and decent beaches.

St John was a fricking vacation paradise.

Just some clarity for others, Soggy is not on St. John. It’s on Jost Van Dyke in BVIs.

And a passport is required to go there along with a $60 entry fee.
