What you say? I am making this trip happen this year, and I want the full experience.

It gets cold there at night in the summer so I would choose the summer.

The Maine coast is cool AF.

We were near Bar Harbor on Mount Dessert Island during the first part of August and the weather was perfect. It would get very chilly at night and pleasant during the day where short sleeves were very comfortable.

Summer is ideal but very busy and hotel prices are very high. If you can handle a little cold then early spring is good or wait until Labor Day

Summer is the obvious answer, but you’re going to pay for it.

The fall is also beautiful and less touristy. Dont do spring or winter. My wife and I like to do a weekend trip in the winter there because it’s so cheap and devoid of tourists, but if you’re looking to experience everything you’re not going to get it that time of year.

We usually do a long weekend somewhere in the states in April, but I worry that Maine may still be feeling the effects of winter by then. Is that accurate?

Is it best to fly into Boston and then make the drive up to Portland? Plane tickets look to be much more expensive flying directly into Portland.

September after Labor Day. Weather is still nice and a lot of the crowds are gone.

It’s still going to be pretty chilly in April, just a heads up.

Yes, you’d be better off flying into Boston and either renting a car or taking the Amtrak directly to Portland. The Amtrak is about 90 minutes and drops you off right in the city.

Best option is the Portland Jetport because you are right there, but Boston and Manchester are both manageable drives.

We were there last year the 1st week of Aug. Weather was fine, low 80s and a little humid for the NE; the locals complained about the heat. It may have gotten close to 90 a few days.

It was crowded in Bar Harbour & Acadia NP at times but it wasn’t horrible; just had to wait to eat, or work to find a parking place at some spots in the NP. It was my only trip there so I have no other time to compare it to.

How do you define “the full experience”?

Fly to BOS and take the Amtrak to Portland. Was only like $20. Summer is the best answer.

Unfortunately the northeast doesn't fully escape winter until the end of May.

The days are more often than not comfortable but it's not unheard of to touch the 40s in May. You may even like it coming from the south. That whole Memorial day to Labor day being "summer" fits the region for a reason.

Went recently in October & the weather was 50’s day & into 30’s at night. Wasn’t unbearable at all, in fact we enjoyed it very much. Not much tourist activity and locals were starting to move to warmer ground

This is my target. Making plans now. Just need to decide how long to be there. Tentative plans will be to fly into Boston and stay there for a day or two then take the train to Portland. That's where I get stumped. How long for Portland and the surrounding areas?

We went to Maine and NH several years ago in early June and had no problem finding hotels, and things were not crowded. Weather was nice but chilly.

Their school lets out and summer season kicks off mid-June. One hotel owner told us we could have anything we wanted second week in June, but they were booked solid for the third week. Said it was like a light switch.

Two days in Portland would be enough to really see everything. If you wanted to go to surrounding areas like Kennebunkport I'd factor in another day or two.

The Inn By The Sea is our favorite place to stay, but it's a few miles from downtown Portland, so if you aren't going to have a car then you may want to stay somewhere more centralized.

We went the first week of October this past year. Had some rain. Temps ranged from 50’s to high 70’s during the day

Portland is neat
About two hour drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park
Freeport area is close to Portland and you can get to Kennebunkport area in about an hour or so.
Several lighthouses in that area, Nubble in York Maine, Cape Elizabeth real close to Portland, etc.

I tell you one time to watch out for is late spring early summer. Make sure you know when the "black fly season" is.

We went the last week of August in 2018. Flew to Boston and drove up. Stayed six or so days in Southport (Boothbay Harbor area, convenient to visit Portland, long haul to Bangor and Bar Harbor area). Weather was low 80s most days, 50/60s at night so wasn't as cool as we had hoped. We were too early for any foliage changes, would love to go back in early October for that. Check out black fly season and be sure to avoid it (Spring to mid-Summer usually).
