All this news is sketching me out. I am more so concerned about my soon to be wife's safety. Is this all just overreaction by the public or is this place really that bad? Any experience? We are going to Punta Cana.

Thousands and thousands of people go there to the resorts every day and have no problems.
I believe both cases were both at the same resort, the Bahia.

Happened at two different resorts, but both resorts are owned by same company. I personally think it’s a huge coincidence that is being blown out of proportion by media. Hopefully all of this smooths over in the next couple of months so you’ll be able to enjoy/relax!

I stayed at the bahia principe in tulum. I am surprised that they weren't killed by the buffet. I thought I was gonna catch the bubonic plague at that cattle trough.

Which resort are you going to?

We stayed at The Sanctuary in March an never felt unsafe or saw any shady activity. The airport was no different from Mexico or any other similiar countries.

I think your only worry will be if it rains a lot since it’s hurricane season(make sure y’all have good trip insurance just in case).
Also....if your soon to be wife is pregnant or y’all plan to get pregnant soon....Zika is still a real possibility in many of these tropical locations so she might want to talk to her doctor.

Just got back from Punta Cana in April and I’ll say I will NEVER be back. We stayed at Secrets’s Resort and we just didn’t like it. The water on the beaches was covered in seaweed and the locals bugged us constantly to purchase things( way worse than Jamaica) The first time I walked on the beach one of the guys offered me weed or blow he said lol. Probably the worst thing was the food..maybe it was just the resort we went to but I’ve heard similar stories now that we are back and I’ve done more research. Sorry to be so negative but I’ve been all around the Caribbean and this was by far our worst experience.

My in laws go to Punta Cana pretty often. They actually just left this morning and will be there for a week. I'll ask them how it was when they return and report back.

Hope you guys aren’t planning to stay at Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana.
Look that resort up on trip advisor. Several reviews about people’s items being stolen from their room(some while the guests were asleep). Also one review detailed a woman that was savagely beaten by a staff member and left in a basement at the resort (her attacker had thought he had killed her but she survived). She even posted gruesome pictures of her at the hospital after she was found (she was missing for several hours).

DR is hit or miss
The deaths are overblown. I wouldn’t let that stop me

I have my doubts about that particular story. She demanded $2.2 million from the hotel owners and they wouldn’t pay. Only then, two months later, did she report the alleged crime to the authorities and the media. She also hired a lawyer and is now suing. Not saying it didn’t happen but that the chain of events is fishy and deserves a hard look.

Went to excellence in April and had a fantastic time. Never felt unsafe at all. The resort was the cleanest hotel/resort I have ever been to.

David Ortiz was shot in DR yesterday at an amusement park yesterday.

I wonder if he was the only shooting victim in the entire world.

DR is very hit and miss in terms of service and quality of food/hotel. I’ve been all over the Caribbean and DR is probably my least favorite place to go for those reasons. That’s just me though, you guys might love it. That being said I’ve never felt unsafe or anything. I think that all this media hype is just typical media fomenting hysteria. Go down there and enjoy yourselves.
As far as the Zika thing, my wife went to Jamaica at 3 months pregnant after her doctor told her not to worry as long as she took basic precautions like bug spray and wearing certain clothes. Our son was born 6 months later perfectly healthy. Like I said don’t listen to the hype from the clown media who wants everyone living in fear.

My finace just got back from a wedding there. She stayed at the same hotel as the woman who got beat down and left for dead stayed at. She made it back last Thursday and didn't die once.
Don't let it hold you back. Probably much more chance of dying if you had your honeymoon in New Orleans.

we had a pretty good time at the hard rock a few years ago. but after going to Isla Mujeres on our honeymoon I doubt we'll return to the DR.

Its your honeymoon, its likely you'll have a great time. But honestly, its something you should have no hesitation about. I'd go somewhere else so you have no reservations.
