How Much Local Currency To Take

Wife and I are joining a tour through Ireland and Scotland at the end of the month. Should spend 5 days in each country. We realize that one takes pounds and the other Euros. Question: roughly how much of each should we take with us to avoid the ATM fees overseas?

Many debit cards don't charge extra fees for withdrawing in other countries, have you checked to see if yours does? But I use a CC with no foreign transaction fees to which will give you the best exchange rate. If asked, always pay in the local currency with your CC. If you pay in US dollars you will get screwed on the exchange rate. Also, many places in Europe don't even accept cash. We go for 3 weeks at a time and I might spend 100 euro in cash.

ATMs are less expensive than the fees charged by those who exchange money. ATMs are the best way to get foreign currency. You don't need to take any with you.

Agree with this. Just make sure you go to an actual bank and not a tobacco shop, convenience store, etc.

Initially, it's very easy to get some cash from an ATM in the airport, and you pay far less in an ATM fee than at the exchange places.

Don't take any. Make sure your bank doesn't charge international fees and use your debit card as normal. Some places in mainland Europe require coins to use the toilet, but I didn't see that in the UK or ROI. ALWAYS select "pay in local currency," not in dollars. Your bank will get a better rate than you can.
Do NOT NOT NOT do currency exchange at your home airport. If you're bound and determined to wander around with a bunch of cash that you'll end up trading back in ten days after you land, just hit the airport ATM after you land.

In today's world there really isn't a need to bring cash with you before hand. I know it may sound scary, but anything you would need in your first few hours in country can be paid with credit/debit card. Once you get to your lodging you can find a bank and use their ATM to pull a hundred bucks or so out, but you probably won't even use it all. I have been in your shoes thinking I just HAD to have cash, but its really not necessary.

I'd echo this, especially if OP is traveling through Ireland and Scotland. There won't be a need to bring local currency ahead of time. Honestly, may not need to use cash at all. If it's needed, use an ATM and don't accept the bank's conversion rate. Always pay in local currency.

We took 500 euros and used our visa most of the time. Very few pubs in Ireland took Amex, the big hotels did but not much else

I am waiting for some idiot to say Tree Fiddy but actually about $350,is what I usually take. Then I get cash advances with my credit card from the real major banks.

Just finishing up a 5 week remote work trip in Spain, and we actually need cash euros twice the entire time. Android wallet and apple pay the whole time with our credit card. Both times it was small bars that only took cash.
