How are MX/TX border towns these days?

I think I’m gonna take a road trip to south Texas. Any suggestions on border towns that would be safe or worth a visit? No kids, just adults.

Want to visit Terlingua, so that would work. Just want to drink a few beers, eat, and maybe shop a little.

Terlingua, Marfa, Big Bend, Lajitas are all good and well.
I’ve had multiple friends vacation there and/or hunt recently and no issues.

I’m not worried about the US side. I should clarify, I’m asking about crossing over in to Mexico for a day.

That part is fine. My friends went and had lunch and shopped across the border for fall break. No issues.

We go to Progresso all the time. Always stay within 3 blocks of the boarder. Arturo's restaurant is always our stop for lunch. White table cloth, waiters in tux and very reasonable

Juarez is just as safe as any other US city. El Paso and Juarez are pretty much one big city

La Fogata did the same thing recently and opened up a place in Mission.
Service was always amazing at those places. One time the chef at La Fogata came out and chatted with us. My wife said she loved bananas foster, so he sent one of the staff to the market to pickup fresh bananas then made it at the table for us.

Did a full day in Nuevo Progresso a few months back. Basically bounced around ate and drank all day. You don’t want to venture off the Main Street. When the sun start going down start walking with the masses back across.
Firstly we stopped at Pancho’s for some drinks and snacks. The music is loud and the food and drinks are cheap and good. Service A+. Lots of good people watching. It’s inside of the Disco Supercenter once you cross the bridge on the right. Can’t miss it.
Lots of folks trying to sell you crap on the sidewalk but if you don’t give in they’re not intimidating and fairly polite.
Tons of folks coming over for cheap veterinary and dental work. Also lots of folks coming over for other things as well. The pharmacy’s and groceries are pretty wild to walk around in.
Cheap parking on the US side. Nice bathrooms too to use before venturing over.
Make sure you bring a few extra dollars to cross and reenter. Customs does not stamp you on the way back in, they do ask what you bought. We picked up some tiles and tortillas. Have your passport or passport card.
It’s a fun day trip.

They are not as bad as the media tell you they are. We went to Acuna in 2019 and had a fricking blast.
Just like any city on the planet, stay off the back dimly lit streets and don't cause trouble with the locals.

My family is from Del Rio and we go to Acuna every time we are there. Manuel’s steakhouse is right in the main town square across the border and that’s our go to restaurant.

They're all fine and probably a little less crowded than they used to be given that many Americans are scared to cross. We crossed at Juarez a couple of times a month back when it was labeled the most dangerous town on earth and never had a moment's problem. My wife would cross by herself to have dental work done. We used the airport in Juarez several times for domestic flights to Ixtapa and drove and parked at the airport...never had a minutes issues except for one time when I found a box of dove loads under the back seat and had to find a place to get rid of them LOL. If you ain't going to get involved in the drug trade you will be fine. I know a man who drives from Brownsville to Ixtapa several times a year and several people with places at Puerto Penasco and several who spend part of the year in Bahia Kino and they all cross at various points and never have had any issues. Also know a group of folks who trailer boats LOADED with electronics and high end fishing gear to Cabo every year and they never have any issues. Outside of the police doing what the Mexican police have ALWAYS done to Americans...strong arming them...the troubles are over blown as far as tourists are concerned. It is entirely possible that you could find yourself in trouble but no more so than anywhere in the US....unless, again, you are looking to go into the drug business. Being cautious is advisable and your asking indicates you exercising your due dilligence...some posters will probably tell you you're gonna die as soon as you get near the border...living life scared like that is sad. Have fun!

And a really nice one...Juarez is HUGE and has some incredibly nice areas. The reputation and the fear some folks have for Juarez is a shame...its really pretty nice.
