Wife and I got married in August of this past year and did not take a honeymoon due to just purchasing a house and covid. Just received an unexpected inheritance from grandfather and my wife is wanting to go to the mediterranean for our much delayed honeymoon. Would you recommend a cruise?

Would I recommend it? No. But it’s your honeymoon, not mine. You do what makes you happy.

Personally I’d look at countries where the dollar goes a long way and plan a trip from there.

I've done literally zero research on it but the Croatian coastline cruise that a poster posted in the Croatia thread looks pretty interesting.

If you want to cruise do it
Or book a flight into somewhere you want to go and travel the country and then fly out from elsewhere....

Whatever you decide never go back and compare prices ??

First of all, congrats on recent nuptials! Sorry the timing didn't work out with COVID. Personally, I think the long, fancy honeymoon immediately after the wedding is overrated. Lots of stress to come down from. My wife and I spent our "honeymoon" in NW Georgia for a long weekend and did our true honeymoon trip when the timing made more sense for a long vacation. But to each their own.

Would love to help, but some preliminary info from you will go a long way.

How do you and your wife like to travel/vacation? Are you big on history and sight-seeing? Just want to chill and relax?

Are ya'll foodies, or just eat whatever is placed in front of you? (nothing wrong with either )

You mentioned the Mediterranean, so I'm assuming ya'll are looking for a beach scene? Or are you simply referring to countries adjacent to the Mediterranean?

And hopefully not intruding, but what sort of budget are we talking? "Reasonable price" is kind of subjective.

Thanks for the input. I worked in the Birmingham, UK right out of college for a year but never really travelled to the southern european countries. My wife is big into history and wants to head to Spain or Italy. She came over to visit me in Birmingham and we went to London and Paris. She wants to head to Southern Europe due to the warm climate. I'm down for whatever as long as its not going to break the bank.

In that case, my initial suggestion would be Rome, Naples (read: Pompei), and the Amalfi coast. I'm not a huge fan of Naples itself, but it's sort of necessary if you want to get to the Amalfi coast without having to drive yourself, which - trust me - you don't want to do.

Positano is very nice, but pricey depending on where you stay. It's the one town where me and my wife splurged a bit on our trip there. Sorrento is more touristy, but more reasonably priced, I think. Amalfi is another option. There's a bunch of towns on the Amalfi coast you can explore. And they are easy to travel between with the Sita bus, so it doesn't necessarily make a huge difference which town you stay in.

Check it out and see what you think. If that doesn't seem like the right fit, I have other suggestions.

We went to Amalfi with a short stop in Rome. Amazing honeymoon. Went in September. Stayed in Ravello, Positano and Sorrento. Rented a boat for the day and explored the coast and Capri. Incredible all around but Ravello was far and away our favorite stop.

Not cheap but can be done for less than you’d probably think.

Nice is a great honeymoon spot and it’s pretty affordable. Same with Barcelona .

If your wife wants to go to the Mediterranean, I would go to the Amalfi Coast and stay here Villa Gabrisa They have three rooms on the first level up the stairs with 24" X 24" private terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. The view is spectacular. Perfect for a honeymoon.

This is a small, family run B&B type hotel. The reason it is not real expensive is that it is a little walk up the hill from the beach.

I have been on a Mediterranean cruise and enjoyed it very much, but that is not my favorite way to experience Europe because you don't spend enough time in ports. This especially hampers your ability to appreciate the night time dining scene.

Yes. Now I haven't been to some of these, yet, but they're on my serious radar. I'd say look into the coastal towns along the Adriatic in Croatia, Montenegro or Albania (ferry over to the "Albanian Riviera" from Corfu Greece?) Some of the beaches along the Montenegro coast look spectacular.

Cruise? Sure. In fact in the other thread I suggested the small cruise lines touring the Croatian Coast.

Viking's cruise originating in Malta looks amazing. They aren't large ships compared to the traditional ocean liners. Maybe 800-1000 passengers typically.

Know it's not the Mediterranean, but...

Prague is one of the most romantic cities in Europe. And the entire country is amazing. We plan on visiting outside of Prague this November. Places to visit.

We love this blogger "Lifestyle Hal". Does some great videos. Check out this recent one on the Czech Republic.

I thought Lugano Switzerland was the prettiest place I'd ever seen. Talk about romantic.

I can't think of many more romantic areas of the world than Tuscany. You could do Florence, drive to the Amalfi Coast as noted. Stay in a Villa!

If you want a budget friendly place with great weather and lots of history in southern Europe, you might consider Greece. The smaller islands like Naxos are considerably less expensive than Santorini or Mykonos. There are some amazing beaches on Crete that would be perfect for a honeymoon as well.

Cheap, warmer, and historic - For me that would be Hungary, slovenia, and Croatia. You could even tie in venice if you stayed in that area.

Istanbul is very romantic and extremely affordable -- your meals will be half the cost of comparable meals in the US. There are tons of amazing historical sites.

More generally, I'd pick a couple of places I wanted to go, and then I'd look at cheap flights between them. Europe has so many low-cost airlines that it's easy to fly between cities inexpensively.

I most emphatically would NOT recommend a cruise. Fly all the way to southern Europe and then eat most of your meals in a floating glorified cafeteria? No thanks.

If you're trying to stretch a dollar, truly, then Portugal is a great choice. But if she loves history, it's hard to beat Italy....and Italy doesn't have to be expensive. Go to the public library and check out some travel guides, surf the Rick Steves internet forums, and figure out what you both want to get out of this vacation. Food? Scenery? Ancient history? WWII history? Art, architecture? Tracing family roots?

Discuss what you really want to do/see/experience, and do some research on the areas that most appeal.

Often, a short term rental over a hotel room can be very cost effective. You'll be able to eat in for some of your meals, which means you'll get to hit the local markets & stores--one of my favorite parts of any travel adventure.

Depending on when you go, a week long trip to Italy with airfare is cheaper than driving to and spending a week in Disney.

We used Globus Travel

I know I don't get a vote.
But I vote for Amalfie coast.
Most beautiful place on the planet.

Fly into Naples, and fly out of Rome.
Mix in a bit of wine country in between. Perfect honeymoon.

I go out of my way now to visit a supermarket or something just to see the products.
