Captiva is nothing like Ft. Myers Beach. Captiva is small and easily walkable. I think you'd enjoy it if you are looking for a quiet "Old Florida" kind of trip. The beach usually has good shelling in the winter. Not as good as nearby Sanibel, but still good.
You can order groceries ahead of time from Jerry's grocery store in Sanibel and have them delivered to your house if you don't want to grocery shop. There is a small grocery store on Captiva called the Island Store.
There are a few good restaurants on Captiva. I do suggest doing one meal at Doc Ford's restaurant in Sanibel and ordering the Yucatan Shrimp dinner. That is what they are famous for.
I also suggest taking the Captive Cruises boat trip to Cabbage Key and having lunch there. It makes for a nice day.
There is a shell museum between Sanibel and Captiva. Captiva Library usually has an interesting display. Captiva Chapel has church services each Sunday. Its near the library.

I just went through this. I was initially looking at Florida but ended up booking a condo on the beach in Aruba.

Went to Baker’s Cay (Hilton) in Key Largo the week after thanksgiving this year. They were running a special for 25% off daily rate and a $50 resort credit per night of stay. Room rate was around $300/night, beachfront, partial ocean view. Place was near empty the first 3 nights since everyone left after Tgiving. Plan to do the same next year also.

I kinda gave up on Florida.
Go to the bamahas now.
I’m not sure how they compare cost wise in the end, but it has to be close.
The bamahas are just a way better experience.

Bahamas is infinitely more expensive to visit. It’s up there with Hawaii in terms of the costs of transporting goods.

The allure of south Florida compared to going internationally is that many of those snowbirds go for 6+ weeks. When you are older and need things like doctors, creature comforts of the states, etc that is the appeal. Sure if you just want to go for 5-7 days there’s no issues going elsewhere.
Again though they are snowbirds, generally from after Christmas to April is their peak. You can find great deals in November and December, or last minute. There’s also some areas that only allow 30 day minimums. So finding a hotel there is likely to be pricey. But you maybe able to go just a couple miles away and find it completely different.

Not sure I’ve seen Sanibel this busy even pre-Ian. It is slammed right now and not just the olds, lots of younger families, probably visiting the olds. Island looks much better than say this time last year.

I own an airbnb right across the street from the beach in Venice. We are at about $150 to $200/night in season. Maybe look at some other places?
