Second San Antonio or Hill Country.
It’s about 2 hrs longer but it’s worth it.
Everything you’ve just described you can get in San Antonio, New Braunfels, or Austin.

Wimberley (just picking a random hill country spot) is all of 530 miles from New Orleans. That’s around 7.5 hours without stopping and minimal traffic.
With a stop and Houston area traffic, it is more than likely 8 hours or a little over it.

I’d probably rather the gulf coast beaches than the ozarks.
But 6 hours also gets people in OKC to Dallas metroplex, Austin, Kansas City, Tulsa.
So probably advantage OKC.
Part of the New Orleans problem. Half our radius is ocean

Oklahoma City is over 10 hours away from New Orleans

Hot Springs would be in range.
Was going to be my suggestion. It's about 7.5 hours though.
But a fair bit to do. There's lake activities, decent restaurants, magic springs, bath houses and breweries, etc.

Please don’t.
To the OP, why not Ark? Beautiful areas there.

It's really not feasible to drive 6-8 hours for a long weekend kind of trip like this, especially with kids. It sucks to spend that much time driving and such little time having fun.

Yea agree. I don't do longer than 4-5hours if driving with my kids, and thats for any vacation . Any longer and we're flying.

New Orleans airport has direct flights to anywhere you want to go
Use them and it’s probably a cheaper trip

I rarely drive for any trip longer than 5 hours these days, but I get what the OP is asking. First, if you have a family of 5 flying definitely is not cheaper. Second, travel time flying door to final destination vs 6-7 hr driving time is pretty comparable for a family trip, especially if you have kids and need to get a rental car.
Lots of great options in 7-8 hr drive range including mountains, lakes, amusement parks, historic sites, pretty much everything but desert and snow skiing. And for those saying NO has a crappy location, maybe, but I bet most of the US would love to be within 6 hours of world class beaches and warm water you can swim in 8 months of the year.

Holmes Creek area between I10 and Panama City is awesome. A bunch of beautiful natural, blue springs. Some great kayaking/paddle board/canoeing to be had, and some neat state parks in the area like Florida Caverns State Park, Falling Waters State Park, Econfina Water Management Area, etc. You can even hit Blackwater River State Park in between NOLA and there.
Some photos I've taken:
Ponce De Leon Springs
Morrison Springs

The problem with living on the coast is instead of 360 degrees of travel options by car you only have 180* or so. So yes fewer options OP, and the geography in the south is not as diverse as some other areas for sure. It is what it is.

It’s actually one of the big reasons I left NOLA. Sure NOLA is great but there’s genuinely nothing around it. Nothing else in Louisiana or the lower 2/3 of Alabama and Mississippi. Nothing in Arkansas except for the Ozarks in NW Arkansas. Dallas and Houston aren’t really tourist cities and while there is San Antonio and the Hill Country that’s more than 6 hours away.
NOLA when you think about it really is isolated. I second the recommendation that there are some great state parks in the Florida Panhandle. De Leon Springs, Florida Caverns State Park, Torreya State Park and even Wakulla Springs and Alfred Maclay Gardens as you go east into Tallahassee.
Florida Caverns and Torreya are still recovering from Hurricane Michael but are still good places to visit. There’s genuinely more to Florida than just the beach and 30a.
