Right when I was getting out of college, I decided I wanted to get into backpacking a little.
I took a leisure class some outfitter put on at UNO. Bought a decent amount of gear and went on a few trips.
Didn't take me long to also figure out the living in the Nola area has to be one of the worst places to be if you wanted to get into an activity like this and don't have a big budget to fly places.

no beach limits you really to houston area. if you said 8 hours, that opens dallas and atlanta
plenty to do in houston though for kids.
