BIL may be graduating from Marine Corps basic training in Parris Island sometime in January. Thinking of taking a few days off and going to Charleston while we are close. Just looking for the must do's and must eats while we are there. Only place I know I want to go is Rodney Scott's BBQ place. Hoping it lives up to the hype.

Plenty of really good food places out that way, I'd have to go back and look at my trip review. Did the haunted tour, food tour, history tour as well...
Plenty of places to drink as well with fantastic breweries

Great restaurant town. Some of my favorites are FIG, SNOB, Anson and the Peninsula Grill.

The Vendue is a nice hotel. Excellent location , and they have a couple of nice bars in there including one on the rooftop.

For coffee, I really like Kudu and Bitty & Beau. The second place, in particular, is one that I’d recommend supporting. Good coffee, great mission — employing individuals with development and intellectual disabilities.

For breakfast and lunch, I prefer quick / takeaway options to get on with the rest of my day. Red Dog Deli makes a fantastic breakfast sandwich. At lunch, I like getting soul food at Hannibal’s or Dave’s Carry-Out.

The Darling is a fun happy hour spot. Everyone is there for beers, cocktails and oysters. A little easier to get a seat than a place like 167. I’ve done oysters at Leon’s, but that was for a welcome party the night before a wedding.

For dinner, I’d recommend Husk, Lewis BBQ or Maison. Husk took a little more planning with reservations, but I enjoyed it — more unique than what I find in Chicago.

For drinking, Charles Towne Fermentory makes the best hazy IPAs in Charleston. Slightly off the beaten path, but a few bars downtown will have a couple of their beers on tap, including Charleston Beer Works. Last Saint is my favorite cocktail bar. Dark, lively spot. Don’t know that I’d go if you’re on the older side.

I ate at Husk and Fig and a Church like Restaurant near the Slaves Quarter area.... outside of those 3 everything was just quick or eating at a brewery

My wife and I just got back and, thanks to this board, we had a great time. I’d recommend a carriage tour to get a quick view of the old city and garden areas and to get your bearings. Go early before it gets too hot.

In our opinion, the Dewberry had the best rooftop bar views, but can be tough to get a table outside.

Not to be rude, but pretty sure hoopsgalore is talking about Brown Dog Deli? The wife and I heard about it from a carriage ride tour guide and went for lunch, then went back the next day as well. Excellent option for lighter and quicker breakfast / lunch.

The “Church like Restaurant” another poster mentioned is likely Church and Union. They had good brunch options.

Agree with most other food suggestions.

Yes, that is what I meant. Not sure why 'Red' popped into my head. Thanks for the clarification.

Honestly my suggestion is make the short trip to Savannah. Similar feel to Charleston, but better overall.

It is really good. We went for lunch while we were there last week. Whole hog plate was amazing. I got it with collards and mac & cheese. Probably the best collards I have ever eaten. I think it was 8 oz of pulled meat from the whole hog.

The whole hog sandwich is damn good too. 6 oz of pulled whole hog meat served open-faced on white bread and includes pork skins.

FIG is way better than Husk

Husk used to be good but has lost it, the bar is much better

I’d push Austen off the Ravenel bridge, but that’s just me.

Rodney Scott’s place is hit or miss. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it misses, it tastes like it was cooked on propane.

If you want simple seafood on paper plates, with a great water view go to Bowens Island. Place looks like a dump, but I’ve been happy with it for years.

Fig is probably the best, if you enjoy good seafood and a farm to table type of place. The Ordinary is good, but more as a lunch/tapas type of place for me, not for a nice dinner, based on price point and food. Was not impressed whatsoever with SNOB.

Zero George is a great place to stay if doing the “romance with the wife” thing. The attached restaurant has a great tasting menu if you want to go all out for one meal.
