Looking at a flight in October to Italy. I’ve got 2 questions:

1) Will prices go down? I’ve got my google alerts set for the flight, and it goes up or down a few dollars, but I’m anxious that the price will jump up at some point. Any reasonable expectation that the price will go down in the next month or two?

2) It’s on British Airways with a layover in Heathrow. Looking at the other thread, I’m wondering how much time I need for the layover. On the way there is 4 hours, on the way back is 2 hours.
I’ve flown out of Heathrow before and it was no problem at all. But the other thread got me wondering about the layover experience.

TIA

If your flights are in the same terminal, then it's no big deal, but changing terminals at LHR can be a nightmare.

Yes flights will go down. You're traveling in October which is a low travel period especially for us-europe. Last few years we've seen low costs in the $500-$700 range.

One of the things you can do when flying international is you can book a stopover in a city for less than 24 hours at the same cost. Not sure if you have any desire to visit London/England at all but may be a way to break up your trip? Book it as a multi city ticket with msy-lhr-italy, then italy-lhr, and next day lhr-msy (or wherever you are starting from)

RE: Layovers.

Rule of thumb for international travel: Whatever can go wrong WILL!!! Delays. Customs. Name it.

I try to target 3 hours minimum if we can. Can always get some lunch, maybe go to a premium lounge if you have it. Far better than being so stressed out missing a connection.

I'm looking at flights at end of May and back in June for Spain and Rome, crazy and probably not gonna get better. $8700 for 3 of us in premium economy.

Most likely. What current price are you seeing?

Both SHOULD be fine, Heathrow can be a pain in the arse, but it should be ok.

Just an FYI, British has among the highest fees and taxes of American Airlines affiliated airlines.

American travel to Europe was very high last year as a result of "revenge travel" for vacations that were postponed during the pandemic, but travel to Europe is expected to remain very high this year as well.

This is not going to be a good year for low airfares to Europe.

Yeah I have been to Europe twice since covid, I get the costs, but 8700 for premium economy for 3 is still really high.

Craziness.

I usually use miles when flying PE or Biz though

Economy for two is $3,700 and premium economy for two is at $5,100 at the moment.

That’s my worry. I just don’t know if we will see a decrease in prices like we have in the past.

Thanks Cuse. I looked at flying out of a different airport or stopovers and it just wasn’t worth the extra time or shortening our vacation.
Unfortunately we can’t be very flexible on our days so we kind of have to take what is available. I’m pretty sure I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and do it at some point.

Thanks fellow travelers. I really appreciate everyone’s input.

Is there some reason that you have to fly BA? Because there are much, much lower prices on other carriers. Since your profile says "BR or somewhere else", I assume that you are flying out of MSY.

I don't know your exact dates, but the most expensive days in October, I still see RTs from MSY is $1127 to Milan - MXP, and $1180 to Rome - FCO, and many are significantly less. Those are either on Delta or United. Prices to Venice are similar.

I do not understand where you are getting the $3700 from.

This is patently ABSURD.

You can get to Europe generally for two people for below 2k.

If you planned an entire trip and solid dates before booking flights, that's the problem.

Flights for me always determine the trip

British Air tacks on fuel surcharges if you fly through Great Britain. Look at Iberia into Milan.

I would never fly through London to Italy unless it was the last resort. Try to find some directs from the USA if possible. Much better imo, that’s a good distance from London to Italy which means you won’t arrrive until noon or well after which means your first day is wasted and you’ll be exhausted.

The reason I wanted fly British Airways, is that it allows us to leave Wednesday night and get there Thursday afternoon. We can settle in, get a meal and get a good nights sleep so we can start fresh Friday morning. Any other flights would make us fly out Thursday morning or mid day and land Friday morning, making it a jet lagged exhausted day.

American Airlines. KC to Philly, Philly to Barcelona and then return flight from Rome. This is shortest and best price on Google flights. It’s more than our 7 day cruise.

So, you want to spend an extra $1500 so that you can arrive late in the afternoon? OK, if that's what floats your boat, but I don't understand why you made a post about how expensive the flights are.

But, if arriving later is really what's important, there are still less expensive ways to arrive later in the day.

If you want to arrive in the afternoon (you still didn't say where in Italy you are flying, but I'll assume that it's Rome), here's what you can do:

You can buy a MSY-JFK nonstop RT with Delta for under $300. You can then fly in Premium with Norse Atlantic JFK-FCO for $1588 per person (or $662 in regular economy) and arrive at 3:15 PM.
