From BR late June. Looking for 2 day stops going and coming back to break up the drive. All recommendations appreciated.

You could stop in Birmingham but I wouldn't unless you really just want a break from driving. If you want to go somewhere worth visiting, take two nights in the Highlands, NC. That's not really the ideal location for breaking up the drive but definitely worth visiting.

Good luck. Drove from South MS to Bryson City last month and man that is a boring drive. Worth it to get there, but not much to see on the way.

Yes familiar with Highlands. Thinking Blue Ridge going or coming looking for another option. Thanks.

How about Chattanooga? Looks like it only adds about an hour to your trip.

if you're just wanting a decent place to stop and rest about halfway, Auburn/Opelika has decent hotels and chain restaurants for a small town. Chattanooga has some sightseeing and is a nice town but you're not too far from your destination in Chattanooga. Look Out Mountain is worth a stop in Chattanooga.

Definitely look at Chattanooga with rafting on Ocoee thrown in. You can also get to the east side of the Ocoee gorge from Blue Ridge. Take the route through Murphy, Hayesville, and Franklin,NC to Asheville. Great places to stop along the way as you travel (not necessarily Murphy but many other small towns on route). Beautiful drive.

Auburn/Opelika

+1

I did this drive last year.. Opelika has a couple of breweries, a distillery and several restaurants in it's downtown area. It's a nice little clean downtown with plenty of parking and you can get out of town and get through Atlanta before the afternoon traffic.

try to plan your trip on I40 through the mountain tunnels on the border of TN and NC when its not raining.

those big rigs dont give a shite and will continue going 75mph+ throughout the winding road and you'll end up unable to see out your windshield and they'll bully your lane.

you have no choice but to match speed; going faster or slower is a recipe for disaster.

Route through Nashville either coming or going and incorporate the whole of the Natchez Trace. The Southern Terminus of the Trace is less than 100 miles from the PMAC.

Don't be in a hurry if you do. God help you if you go 5mph over the limit. Feds don't play; you're looking at a $500 ticket.

How common is this? I’ve been traveling Jackson to Tupelo and back monthly (for about 6 months). I have yet to see anyone checking speed. I cruise at 9mph over.
