I drove to Breckenridge from CENLA in late September 2019. Never thought I'd get out of Texas but once we got into New Mexico, the scenery and weather greatly improved.

I do the drive at least once a year back to NOLA.

It doesnt suck that much. 287 from FW to Amarillo is low key awesome driving. Then the panhandle on gets pretty.

Louisiana still sucksr

Drove twice from Houma to Odessa. Never again. I'm a guy who typically doesn't mind driving, but once you get west of Forth Worth, there's nothing but windmills and solar panels for 4 hours. The only good thing was the flat out 85 MPH and not seeing a local PD or trooper the entire drive.

I'll second that. It's even better riding in the passenger seat.

How easy is it to just sleep in the car at a camp site? I'm going to Colorado in early August and want to drive from Denver to Telluride and back. I too don't want to stay in hotels. Too expensive.

Depends where you go. Some campsites require reservation and some are fist come first served. Lots of options.

Go to Crested Butte. Gorgeous hikes, scenery, cool downtown, camping by waterfalls. It’s about 4 hours from Colorado Springs. You won’t be sorry!

Out west there’s millions of acres of national forest with tons of free campsites and tons of areas you can just park on the side of the road and legally camp.

In regards to road trips with families, pro tip that really helps us out on travel days is to pack a single duffle or whatever bag you want with a single nights items and clothes for everyone. That way when you stay in a hotel for a single night, you don’t have to unload everyone’s entirety of crap, you just take the one bag and are good to go.

I’d like to say it works perfectly, but if women are involved then…

My dude! I did this for our trip from LA to Colorado this summer. It was awesome.

Also the other poster's follow up is brilliant. Wife didn't realize that it wouldn't be good to pack the crib in FIRST. Had to unpack the whole car to unload it, so my awesome planning was ruined.

Just drove to that same area 2 weeks ago. We spent 10 days in Salida. Traveling with kids so we slept in FW and then went 287 from
FW to Wichita Falls, Vernon, Amarillo, Raton, Wallenberg, Westcliffe, Cotopaxi, Salida.
There’s not much along that drive but we always stop at The Burrow in Claude, TX. Coffee, lunch, gift shop, etc…
On the way home when we got to Henrietta, TX we went NE to Nocona, St. Jo, Gainesville, etc and came out east of Marshall. 2 miles further to go that way, but you get to skip Dallas.
Absolutely love the drive and I’ll 2nd what someone said about Salida earlier. Spend some time in the town, down by the river, etc…it’s legit
