I did it reverse from you. When Auburn played Florida State in the Championship game, we flew to San Francisco, stayed a few days then drove down the coast to Pasadena.

Was a fantastic drive. Plan for a slow drive and take plenty of time. Our biggest issue was fog. It was very foggy in the Big Sur area and we basically saw squat.

About 3/4 of the drive was fantastic. Id love to do it again and see more of it.

Great trip. The scenery is beautiful along the Pacific Coast highway. You can stop in Solvang, the touristy Dutch village. We enjoyed touring Hearst Castle. Carmel, Pebble Beach and the 17 mile drive around the Monterray Peninsula are nice. In S.F. we like to stay in the Union Square area.

Did this literally 2 weeks ago. geauxpurple pretty much said it all. Add sushi in Santa Barbara and try to catch the sunset on the drive.

Hit up Hearst castle and Monterey bay aquarium. Winchester house in San jose is pretty cool too. The California coast beach towns are pretty awesome, and the views are amazing

It's gonna be a great drive. I've lived here all my life, and I still get a feeling of freedom when I drive up or down the coast. Big Sur is epic. Pismo is a huge beach right down south of San Luis Obispo. Santa Cruz is kinda cool because there are a lot of old hippies there and it has a pretty laid back attitude.

You could stop in Santa Barbara (where I live), or Carpinteria, Summerland, or Ventura. Decent beaches, ocean water is decently warm.

If you're looking for good restaurants, just wait until you get to SF. The food scene in SB is kind of mediocre, sadly.

Such a great drive.

Santa barbara is a good place to stop for lunch.

Before Big Sur, there is a massive mating place for elephant sea lions. There are hundreds of them right off the road. You can't miss it.

Big Sur is beautiful. Nepenthe is a decent place to eat, with an amazing view.
If you camp at all, Treebones has a "glamping" resort right on the cliffside where you stay in heated yurts instead of tents. You can even rent out a human nest. If your an OT baller, stay at Post Ranch Inn or at least get a meal there.
Stop and check out The McWay waterfall as well. One of the only waterfalls that goes directly into the ocean. Very beautiful cove. You can get down to the waterfall only if you take the hike behind the falls.

Pfeiffer beach is north of Big Sur and really beautiful.

17 Mile drive is next. Get lunch on the 18th at Pebble Beach.

Stay in Monterey on one of your nights too. Small but cool little town with a boardwalk.

I did this exact drive pretty much last month.

I stayed in Santa Barbara and Carmel when I went. I would recommend staying a night in Morro Bay , one or two nights near Carmel or Carmel by the sea, and maybe a night in Santa Cruz.

Morro Bay has a lot of seafood restaurants on the water and looks like it would be a cool spot to kayak.

From there take pacific coast highway and take your time taking in the views. The route from there to Carmel is amazing. Just be prepared to pull over to let the locals pass you up along the route . I wasn't as fast as them driving those routes along the cliffs. We hit up McWay waterfall and Pfeifer state beach park along the route. Both had really nice views.

In Carmel, I would check out point lobos state park. Some really scenic hiking there. Carmel by the sea is a cool little town with lots of shops, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms.

Ruddell's Smokehouse in Cayucos has some of the best fish tacos I've ever had. Cayucos is just north of Morro Bay.

We went up to the area of Point Reyes. Saw one car across the southbound lane lodged under the fence on some rocks. I thought we were going to die pretty much every second. I am not sure i am ever going back.

Was the drive that dangerous?

I loved driving through Big Sur but my wife did not love it as much as me. Especially around the ragged point area.

I am glad someone else said this. I had a panic attack and we had to pull off the PCH. Cliffs on the side of the road scare me!

Probably not. I think being a front seat passenger had a lot to do with it. I am sure that if I were driving, I would have been fine.

My wife was in a similar situation as you. If I do the drive again with her, she is getting a Xanax beforehand.
